It makes me kinda sad when I see this item.

I don't know if they still do it now, but miners used to take a canary underground in the mines. When it died it was a sign that somewhere close dangerous gasses where released, because the gasses didn't have a smell.

So, after seeing this item, I don't think I'm gonna be going back into my mine again in the near future. Heres why:

So, it's about 5:30 am, and i decide just before I go to bed, I'm gonna hit up the garrison for resources. I clear out my herb garden, pick up my garrison resources, and leather, and then head on over to the mine. Now, I've never actually seen the minecart before, up till now i figured the mine was just full of ores and junk.

So, I saw one. It was at the very top of the first staircase just feet from the entrance. I see it and its sparkling, and I'm like, ooh loot! So I go for it, and I loot this out of it. Nothing else. At first I'm like, that's a pretty dark and cool flavor item. nice!

Then I start clearing out the mine.

I didnt notice it at first, but after a while, something just felt off about my mine. I have a level 2 mine, so it's decently large. Im going around getting my mining nodes, and im not attacked by mobs. Then it hit me. There was no movement. None at all. My miners.. They weren't moving. They weren't mining. they weren't walking around. they were all sitting there, standing still..

I hearth'd the eff out of there and i don't think I want to go back :(

Anyone else think of the Banjo-Tooie reference with Canary Mary in Glitter Gulch Mine? I think we all know the struggle of having our fingers fall off from that dreaded Jiggy.

Paying deep respect to all our unknown little winged fellows who died deep somewhere in the mines !
Canaries are very sensitive to air changes and them being unconscious or -worse- dead, was an immediate
indicator of poisonous gases. Small canaries saved thousand of mine workers.
