How to Craft Shadowlands Legendaries - Base Item Costs, Runecarver, Upgrades

Upgrading Your Legendary to Rank 7

The process for upgrading to Rank 7 is similar to upgrading your Legendary to Rank 5 or 6, but the materials are slightly different. You will need the following:

A Rank 7 Base Item

Rank 7 Base Items
Rank 7 Base Items aren't new base items, but rather existing Rank 4 Base Items with a new Optional Reagent added, the Vestige de l’Éternel, which adds 3 ranks to the base item.

Like the Base Item, the Optional Reagent Vestige de l’Éternel is crafted by Blacksmiths, Jewelcrafters, Leatherworkers, or Tailors. The recipe for Vestige de l’Éternel, Tome de l’Éternel, is awarded during the Zereth Mortis Campaign, at the end of Chapter 5, Couronne des volontés. Along with normal profession-specific ingredients, Vestige de l’Éternel requires 2x Essence des Progéniteurs. Like Cristal de korthites in Korthia, these can be earned through many different activities around Zereth Mortis.

Double Legendaries

In Patch 9.2, players can unlock the ability to equip two Legendary items instead of just one. One Legendary can be the Legendary of your choice, and the other must be your Covenant Legendary crafted as a Unity Legendary. The ability to use a Unity Legendary in addition to another Legendary is taught by Tome de l’Éternel which is a reward for finishing Chapter 7 of the Zereth Mortis campaign. This is an account-wide unlock.

There are two ways to equip your Covenant Legendary in tandem with another Legendary:

You can purchase a Legendary waist of Unity - ilevel 265 - specifically for your Class from a vendor.
You can craft the Legendary in the usual way using Souvenir d’Unité. Using this method, your Covenant Legendary can be crafted for any slot except weapon or trinket.

Both the Unity waists and Souvenir d’Unité for each Class are sold by Vilo, the Enlightened Quartermaster. Purchasing the Memory of Unity requires Revered reputation with Les Éclairés. For more information on the Enlightened and how to earn reputation with them check out our guide.

Both the waists of Unity and Legendaries created with the Souvenir d’Unité change their effect based on your current Covenant, so you don't need to buy or craft multiple Legendaries if you switch Covenants.

A new item added in Patch 9.2, Vestige des dévoreurs is an optional reagent that allows you to craft a Rank 1 Legendary (usually at ilvl 190) with an item level of 249. The Vestige can be purchased with Vilo in Zereth Mortis for , after reaching Honored reputation with Les Éclairés.

Sac d’âmes scrutées - Obtain Soul Ash and Cinders with Cosmic Flux

If you're running low on Cendre d’âme or Scories d’âme, you can now purchase them via Sac d’âmes scrutées - The bag costs 3000 Flux cosmique, and contains 5150 Soul Ash and 1650 Soul Cinders, the exact amount needed to craft a Rank 7 Legendary. The bag can be purchased with Vilo in Zereth Mortis.

Écho d’Eonar: Your spells and abilities have a low chance to summon a spiritual familiar to your side, increasing your damage by 10%, healing by 10% or damage reduction by 10% for 10 sec, based on your role. This effect is duplicated on up to 3 allies at 50% effectiveness, preferring allies with the same role.
Slot: Waist, Wrist, Finger

Scories d’âme instead of Soul Ash. They still come from Torghast, though you'll need to clear layers 9 through 12 to obtain them.
This means crafting new legendaries won't impact your ability to upgrade existing ones to higher ranks.

Item level 249 (Rank 5) and 262 (Rank 6) base items.
These are created the same way as other base items, along with a Vestige des origines optional reagent, which increases a crafted base by 2 ranks - crafting a Rank 3 base with the optional reagent results in Rank 5, and crafting a Rank 4 base with the optional reagent creates a Rank 6.

Vestige des origines are also crafted. Duchesse des Voyées in Korthia will sell the Tome des origines recipe at Honored reputation for 2,000 Stygie.
Creating a Vestige requires 40 Cristal de korthite obtainable from a variety of activities, such as Prime de négociant : béhémoth affamé, rare mobs drops, and looting treasures around Korthia.

to learn legendary recipes when you reach 100 at your profession go to Runecarver and will have a quest for you just get it and turn it in at your trainer and then u can learn the legendary recipes! :)

With the base item exp changed in the last patch, do we have a breakdown for what the exp requirements to go up in rank are now?

Rank 1 items generate 5 exp with 75 exp required to go to rank 2 resulting in 15 crafts needed to rank up.

What's the requirement from rank 2 to rank 3 and rank 3 to rank 4?

Do higher rank base items grant more than 5 exp? If so, what do they grant?

After reading the Destruction Warlock guide it mentions that the preferred legendary for ST/Cleve is A Memory of Cinders of the Azj'Aqir. This legendary can be either for the Back or Legs armor slot. This guide makes no mention of the Grim-Veiled Cape which is the base item for the back slot.

Each base item has four Ranks and starts out at Rank 1. 10 Crafts will unlock Rank 2, 20 more will unlock Rank 3, and a further 20 will unlock Rank 4. This sounds like an insane amount of grinding to be ready to craft a rank 4 base piece. That's a total 50 crafts of numerous of very expensive materials...

Here is a VERY IMPORTANT thing that people have not mentioned or I have not seen yet.

DO NOT GO BUY A BASE ITEM THINKING "I'M GOING TO MAKE MINE GLOVES!"

I did this and ended up with a cloak base item I had to put right back on the AH soon after because the memory I wanted did not go on a cloak! Research first my people!

Follow these steps:

Check out the "Best Legendaries to Craft" section of the above post. Do your research!
Compare that to how you want to play and how you ACTUALLY play. For example, you are a hunter and never use a tar trap. If the guide says "Tar Trap is the hands-down one, you have to pick, period the end!" Does not make it so for you! Find one that matches your gameplay.
Open your adventure guide(SHIFT+J) and go to Powers tab.
Find the memory you wanted and TAKE SPECIAL NOTE OF THE SLOTS IT CAN GO IN! It will say Runecarve on: Slot 1, Slot 2
Take note, also, of where it drops. For example - Source: Raid Drop: Stone Legion Generals
Farm that spot!
Farm the Soul Ash in Torghast. Make sure you have enough Soul Ash to make the iLevel that you want. Of course, you want the Level 4 - 235 one...but do you have the 5,150 Soul Ash to make it? If not consider lower levels and upgrading. You do not lose any Soul Ash doing this, but you will spend more gold and/or materials.
Buy or create the missives you want. I suggest Icy-Veins to find out which are your best missives.
NOW you are ready to buy/create your base piece
Head to the Runecarver and enjoy your new legendary!

I hope this helps someone avoid the mistake I did in week 1. LOL Be safe out there.

The Economics of Upgrading is actually misleading. For example, it costs 1950 soul ash to upgrade rank 1 legendary to rank 3 legendary -- it does not cost 3200 soul ash since rank 3 3200 - rank 1 1250 = 1950 (soul ash required to upgrade from rank 1 to rank 3).

For anyone else wondering. Yes, you have the buy the white item from the auction house, every time you want to upgrade. So if you dont feel like blowing over 100k on garbage ilvls, just craft the max piece. It will take a bit longer to get that soul ash, But honestly, I dont think spending 50k on 10 ilvls is worth it. You're only getting a tiny bit of extra stamina and armor. The legendary proc is the same.

Multiple people have asked this guy to update his guide so it reflects the actual cost of Soul Ash to go up each level, as that is how most people are doing it, versus the overall costs, and he hasn't upgraded his guide at all. Probably because he's too busy making guides all the time to actually make decent corrections (he has 80 guides at the time of this posting).

To upgrade a legendary, you need:

-Your current rank legendary (obviously, that's why you are here reading about this).
-The appropriate base item for the new rank
Now the all important question, How Much Soul Ash For Each Level?
* Rank 1 to 2 - 750 Soul Ash
*Rank 2 to 3 - 1200 Soul Ash
*Rank 3 to 4 - 1950 Soul Ash

Players with the Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring, and Jewelcrafting professions can create Base Items for Legendaries. Each base item has four Ranks and starts out at Rank 1. 15 Crafts will unlock Rank 2, 15 more will unlock Rank 3, and a further 15 will unlock Rank 4.

Players with the Enchanting, Alchemy, Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning professions need not feel left out; they will need to provide materials to the others.

Frustrating for a miner/engineer...AH prices for the quest items is ridiculous, not to mention what you'll have to pay once you actually get into the crafting; eight pieces of gear, two missives per piece. Ouch! Once again, engineers have been completely disregarded. The things we make that aren't BOP or engineers-only are not profitable enough to recoup the cost of buying other crafters' wares.

You don't need to craft all the lower ranks of items. I had 2000 ash and skipped the rank 1 cape and went straight to rank 2.

The runecarver does not seem to accept that I have any upgradeable materials, even though I followed this guide. I cannot upgrade 210 legendary with a 225 base item of the same type and slot. Tried with pauldrons and rings; all items are blacked out/unselectable.

This has to be the worst system ever...

First, the base 1 is hardly a Legendary. How is ilevel 190 a Legendary when you can get gear higher than that just running mythic+ or raids?

Second, the upgrade process is terrible. Yeah it counts the Ash you spent, but you have to buy or make a base 4 (assuming you want to upgrade to base 4). So, assuming you have to buy it in AH you're going to have to pay for a base 1 to make the original and a base 4 when you decide to upgrade to base 4.

Third, the Legendary item level will up in future patches. So that means you're going to have to take that level 4 and upgrade to a higher base (say level 6) in the future and do it all over again.

Terrible!

This is the amount of time it will take for you to get your legendary from 190 to 235, its a bit mesy cuz i don't know how to really use wowhead reply system.
But i hope it will be to ur help anyway.

Never mind soul ash cost. I just did some maths on what it would cost me,(in crafting materials) at current AH prices to make the 13 more boots I need to enable me to make the rank 2 ones. Approx 87,000 gold. (That is of course being lazy and not mining up the mats to craft 325 shadowghast ingots) Or I could just buy a pair of the rank 2 for the current AH price of 19,500. Great system Blizzard. I am totaly 100% motivated to go and make my own.

Honestly, after reading this and the comments...I'm not bothering with this gear.

Just another monster time waster inside a game full of monster time wasters. You're probably better off doing PvP or mythic raiding to get geared. Maybe if you like to play solo this is a viable thing, but it just seems like a monster waste of time.

i have an alt where i craft legendaries then i sell them in AH. i have already rank 4 on LW but the problem is that i can't craft rank 5/6 because i need chapter IV of chain of domination.
On my main character i have already unlocked to craft Vestige of Origins but i don't craft any legendaries on my main so i do not have any rank 4, not even ranks 2.
is there any other way how to be able to craft rank 5/6 than completing that chapter? coz i have only 15 renown on that alt. its basically only for AH.

In my mind the new optional reagent mechanic to upgrade base items to 5/6 is the worst system in the game over the last 15 years.

People who made the effort to up their slot recipe in 9.0 might be screwed since they might have to swap to another item due to the domination socket system,
new players have to start from scratch, aswell as those who change professions. I think the current "average" player does not have the time to invest to increase
their profession to the point where you can craft a level 6 legendary. Material costs don't even scratch the ridiculous amounts of gold that people with the recipes
are able to request. Technically with the current content we're at a point where crafting the vestige of origin is absolutely plausible, but the fact that there is no new
recipe to create a level 6 from the level 4 token and the vestige is absolutely ludicrous.

This blows the terrible ranking system from the last two expansions out of the water.
I wouldn't be surprised if active subscriptions plummet due to this change. Absolutely mind-boggling.
This is such a terrible design choice that it makes me think this was marketings/financials fault.
No game designer can think that this improves gameplay.

The Tome of Origins from Duchess Mynx is only needed for people who later switch to and skill up a profession; if you're a crafter (with, I think, Legendary Crafting unlocked) at the time you do the first chapter of the Shadowlands campaign, then you automatically get the book as a reward from the questline.

Can I buy a 235 base item from the AH, send it to my tailor who CAN NOT make rank 4 legendaries, and then apply the new vestige to the 235 base item to make it rank 7? Or do I need to find a tailor to craft the rank 4 base item and then upgrade it to rank 7 at the same time? I am very unclear on this.

I still dont get the two legendaries at once system.
As a kyrian retri, I already do have equipped ilvl 262 Résonance divine (covenant legendary) in the waist slot . According to the guide,
"There are two ways to equip your Covenant Legendary in tandem with another Legendary: You can purchase a Legendary waist of Unity - ilevel 265 or you can craft the Legendary in the usual way using Memory of Unity."
Does that mean that I need to throw away my current legendary covenant belt, buy or craft Unity item instead and craft a whole new second legendary in a different slot? Or can I simply keep my current belt since it is a covenant legendary and equip a second legendary in another slot when the time comes?

I am almost halfway down the page and I am still reading information backwards, most advanced to less advanced, when I am here to find out how I craft a legendary. Ok, so it seems there is confusion about this, which is understandable if one hasn't been obsessively making legendries all this time (like I have haha). Let me see if I can break it down for those who are starting from ground zero so to speak. I was going to reply to the post below this one, but it seems a bit longer than a reply will allow:

So, if you don't have a legendary at all, and want another one in addition to the freebie given at the end of the last storyline, starting from the beginning, then you'll need:

5150 Soul Ash
1650 Soul Cinders
And 2,000 Cosmic Flux
And a 291 Base Item. (assuming you want an iLvl 291 legendary, costs are less for lower iLvl's see below)

What's a "base item"? Any that you normally equip (cloth, leather, mail, plate) in whatever slot you find most desirable (see which are best for you above, as a start at least) on the AH listed under "Armor" and then "Runecarving" for whatever slot you want. (cloaks, necklaces and rings are under the "Miscellaneous" part of the AH, again under "Runecarving" there).

That's what you need if you have never had a legendary item until now (and again, want another on top of the storyline freebie)

Some Soul Ash, depending on the level you want.
Some Soul Cinders, again depending on the level.
And 2,000 Cosmic Flux, IF you want a 291 level item.

To be clear, you got ONE iLvl 265 legendary belt already for free by completing the whole storyline in Zerith Mortis (whenever you do that if you haven't already). SO, if you want ANOTHER, you'll need the items listed above to create another if you want one at iLvl 291. That's what all this talk is about "equipping two legendaries". You get one for free by just completing the last storyline. If you want another, you pay as above.

If you're perfectly happy having only one legendary, then just do the storyline and boom, done, free legendary no Torghast necessary.

If you want another one at iLvl 262 (or below) then the costs are less of course. See the table above under the 9.1 updates section for the costs of legendaries 262 or below.

~~If you want two, you have to purchase the "Memory of Unity" from Vilo in Haven (the Quartermaster there next to the Inn).~~ Edit: You don't have to purchase the "Memory of Unity" if you already have one legendary and get the other free belt from the storyline. BUT, you do have to purchase it if you want two legendaries, both of which is not the free belt from the storyline. If that is your desire, see below, but note, one of the legendaries you equip that's not the free belt will still be restricted to having only the covenant special ability as that's what "Memory of Unity" dictates.

It's confusing, I know, it was when it was first introduced LOL. I've been "upgrading" ever since Shadowlands started though so a bit more familiar, but basically those are the requirements above for those starting from "scratch" so to speak and just want another legendary on top of the one (belt) you already got for free by completing the last storyline in the final patch.

Edit: if you want TWO iLvl 291 lengendaries: (or two legendaries of lower ilvl, but neither are the free belt):

1. But you have no legendaries yet, then you have a WHOLE lot of Torghast grind to do. Basically double what's above.

2. If you already have a 262 legendary (or lower) from 9.1, then still some Torghast grind is required (edit: only if your legendary is lower than 262) obviously to not only upgrade your legendary to 262 (if needed), but also get a whole new 291.

In ~~both~~ this case though, you'll have to purchase that "Memory of Unity" from Vilo the Quartermaster in Haven (right next to the Inn) for 500 Cosmic Flux. One of your legendaries though, will always have to have the "Unity" power, which is your Covenant ability, no matter which slots both are in. So, arguably it's not really worth it to try to get two 291's, unless you want the bragging rights or you really want another belt other than the free legendary.

Oh, and if you want two iLvl 291's (or just two legendaries that are both not the free belt), then you'll have to throw away the 265 legendary you got for free (can't have 3 legendaries)

Edit: Thanks for expanding the Base Item chart to include levels 5 through 7. This makes it clearer to those with professions and those who want to provide mats to crafters.

The Guide mentions Sac d’âmes scrutées at the top. But Sac d’âmes scrutées should be mentioned in the sections on Cendre d’âme and Scories d’âme - because characters no longer have to do Torghast to craft a legendary. There is enough in the bag to upgrade to a level 291 legendary. Vilo, the Enlightened Quartermaster will sell it to you if you've reached Honored status for 3000 Flux cosmique. There is a very good discussion on mailing this to alts on the page for Sac d’âmes scrutées. It's not a straighforward BoA item.

Companions (Followers) can also earn Cendre d’âme and Scories d’âme in weekly questions through your Command (Mission) table.

Be careful when selecting the optional reagent!

It's easy to mistake the optional reagent: Vestige des origines for Vestige de l’Éternel when crafting a Rank 7, ilevel 291 base item. Why?

The icons look similar and the names are similar.
During crafting, materials are automatically filled in from anywhere in your inventory (bank and bags). Not a problem for basic materials.
You get to pick the Optional Reagent in 9.2. When you click on the large green "+" you'll get an inventory box. The display can be a problem.
- Vestige des origines is listed first and Vestige de l’Éternel is listed second.
- If you have a Vestige reagent in stock, its icon will be lit up. If you don't have a Vestige reagent in stock, its icon will be grayed out.
- There is no confirmation of the Rank level of the base item you are crafting before you hit the "CRAFT" button.

If you choose the first "Vestige" reagent, you can end up clicking on Vestige des origines. This is more likely to happen if the icon for Vestige de l’Éternel is grayed out because you don't have it in stock. This will produce an ilevel 262 base item and waste your materials. :(

What you need to craft a Rank 7, ilevel 291, base item:

Rank 4 crafting ability for the item you want to craft. If you mouseover the icon of the base item, it will say "Item level 235". That's okay because the optional reagent will upgrade it.

Materials for the Rank 4 item.

Optional reagent: Vestige de l’Éternel NOT Vestige des origines.

Now that I have a couple of new Legendary items working right, How do we find enhancement sockets for Item level 291 ones? To install a, " Prismatic Socket", A shift with a right click can install an enhancement sockets into the Legendary item. However, Nothing is available in the Auction house that works for anything over level 50.

Just a note for a fresh crafter, like a Leatherworker, coming very late to this party, and wondering whether it's feasible to level up the recipes to be able to craft patch 9.2 legendaries and beyond in Shadowlands. The base level legendary you can craft as of patch 9.2.5 is iLvl 190. And there are 4 upgrade levels, and each level costs you 15 crafts. Each craft currently costs about 1750g -- very roughly speaking -- on my "full" or highly populated EU realm. Let's ignore Mail armor and just focus on leather armor under the Leatherworking profession. There are 8 slots for which to craft a leather piece and upgrade your base crafting level. So, that's 1750 g x 15 crafts per level = 26,250 g per upgraded base slot level. Multiply that by 8 slots = 210,000 g. And that's just the first level of base level upgrading. There are 3 more levels to go. So, 210,000 g x 4 = 840k gold to be able to craft and auction a 291 legendary leatherworking piece in any slot in patch 9.2.5. And no, none of those base-level legendaries that you craft to upgrade your crafting base-level ability can be currently sold for any profit; that's pure cost on you and those items will likely be vendored.

So, yeah, if you were thinking of doing this on a fresh toon for profit or to save gold, I'd say those goals are objectively impossible to achieve today. However, if the goal is fun or masochism, well then things can be debatable.

So in case anyone else noticed that the legendary base items say "unique equipped: shadowlands crafted legendary (1)" and you've been trying to figure out how you are supposed to craft and equip TWO of these I'm going to leave this right here.

Yes, base items say "unique equipped: shadowlands crafted legendary (1)" and if you've crafted and equipped one with your chosen memory you can hover over the completed one and see that it sill has this tag. However, when taking a base item to the runecarver to recraft your covenant legendary with Souvenir d’Unité then the unique equipped tag will change to "unique equipped: enlightened legendary (1)".

So Souvenir d’Unité changes the tag on the base item to "unique equipped: enlightened legendary (1)" on the completed item
Whatever memory you've chosen keeps the tag as "unique equipped: shadowlands crafted legendary (1)" before and after taking it to the runecarver

And for quick reference, the Souvenir d’Unité is purchased from Vilo <Enlightened Quartermaster> in Haven, Zereth Mortis for 500 Cosmic Flux and Revered reputation with The Enlightened.

Am I the only one who thinks this reads more like how to build a dlithium warp drive than a upgrade in a game? Good lord. Why can't this process be more simple. You get a piece of gear that is legendary. You take it to X who upgrades it. Period. End of story. Get on with your life.

And, bonus points, you have to go through all of this with all your alts.

Is there a simple, straightforward, step-by-step guide somewhere that explains how to upgrade an existing legendary for those of us who tend to be linear thinkers?
