My first toon to 85 was my Shaman. I DPS'd my way to 80 and collected Restoration gear even though I was mostly a healer in Lich King. Then I started healing 5-mans and it was a pain and a half. Super tough. Even just healing Normal Lost City was not pretty. I'll try to gear more as DPS first.
Then I got my druid to 82 and had her heal Normal Blackrock and Throne, and I practically snoozed my way through them. I realize that with different groups, there are variables. But I didn't drop below 50% mana at any time (I oom'd like crazy on my shaman). Anyone who has healed with both classes have a similar experience? Druid healing just seems leaps and bounds better than shaman healing right now.

I haven't healed on a druid but I only had mana issues on my shammy if the groups were moronic enough to stand in the bad stuff or pull too much to force me out of my usual riptide -> LHW -> LHW .
Healing Stream spec'd for does a hefty amount of healing for next to nothing, Chain healing barely justifies its spot on my bars, GHW never gets used. ES refreshed when needed. Surge for burst phases (unless LHW can get the job done still).
I also ignored mastery for crit, to benefit from improved water shield and the Ancestral talents.

Yeah 83->84 is the huge stamina bump and the huge spell cost bump. Happy and sad at the same time!

I still heal on both classes and had the exact same experience as you describe. But then I read a couple nice posts here on wowhead's shaman forum which greatly improved my shaman healing. At that point I realized I nowhere near spent the time learning cata on my shaman alt as I did on my druid main. (figures of course, but the new cata healing requires at least some preparation and practice, while I just thought I could heal off of tidal waves procs only, disregarding anything else :p )
It went from "
damn my heals aren't affective enough and need to drink every 2 pulls
" to "
yaaaaawn, how could I have missed that!"
.

My Druid is 85 and my Shaman 84 now. The Shaman is leveling mostly through dungeons, healing most of the time and dpsing when I got a friend to tank for instant queues ;)
I noticed that up until lvl 83 (on both chars) I could basically spam heal my heart out, spells are cheap enough so mana is never an issue. At lvl 84 (and probably also 85) the base mana pool increases a lot so spell cost increase a lot, too.
The funny thing is that the power of healing spells doesn't really change that much from 83 to 85. So my heals are much stronger at lvl 83 then they are at 85 which is just wrong.
I didn't really notice a significant difference between the mana consumption of the Druid and Shaman.
Both went from easy spam healing at lower levels to having to use efficient heals at higher levels.
Still, healing now isn't that bad. Make sure you got a tank who knows what he is doing. Make sure to use Hex / Bind Elemental every single pull. And tell your dps about nasty AoE effects in the dungeon so they know what to run from.
