Why does good information / comments get down-rated.. strange logic

I have noticed over this last week, lots of good information / posts, comments, including my own posts have been down-rated for no apparent reason. The information is valid to the topic, it hasn't been said already ...comes across as helpfull information, yet it gets down-rated. This website is about giving good information, being able to notice topics of interest / posts.

I don't mind getting down-rated, i just don't like to see good posts get spammed with people that don't care & happy to "click" the down-rate button, without even reading the information. Well that is how it comes across. I tend to read the down-rated posts & think to myself "why was this down-rated!...".

Then i see stupid information that has nothing to do with the topic at hand, yet this gets up-rated.

The logic of down-rating good information is rather pointless i think, perhaps if you don't agree with something, then atleast leave a post to explain why you have down-rated something. I don't think you should be able to down-rate something, unless you give a valid point to why it has been down-rated.

Being able to just "click" the down-rate is kinda broken system i think, sorry if this sounds harsh.
My concern is that people abuse the system. Perhaps i'm looking to deep into this function.

Question time:

Has anyone else noticed that valid posts / comments have been down-rated? ...have you been a victim of such?.

Please leave your thoughts on the subject... kinda interested in how the community feels about the ability, & how people use the system.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##Moved to Wowhead Feedback since this is about the site rather than the game.

Well, let's try and be more concrete (I hope you don't mind): Cogwheels can't be reforged.

This information was probably downrated because
A: Get the right cogwheel for the job, why would you want to reforge? You also can't reforge normal gems.
B: You post about cogwheels on a page about a piece of equipment. It seems arbitrary, even if this piece of equipment has cogwheel sockets. If you want to post on cogwheels, doing so on a cogwheel page would be more appropriate.
C: Writing 'Please upvote me' or 'Please don't downvote' or somesuch leads a lot of people to be more critical of what you wrote. Write what's right and pertinent to the page - or at least be funny.

Most people will down vote due to redundancy and if it's outdated or not, OR if it's just plain unuseful (ie: "this drawped on muh fif tryyeee!").

If you haven't noticed, a lot of funnier comments are at the top, where more useful ones are in the middle. If you're going to post something useful, it better have some credible information that hasn't already been listed or mentioned, otherwise you'll probably get downvoted.

Reason i said about the Cogs was that Cogwheels work as a secondary stat, not like normal gems.
Engineer item isn't a JC item, so this item isn't a gem. It works as a secondary stat. Most helms that already have the secondary stat you can reforge, but Cogwheels don't, So anyone making this helm, can see that you can't reforge the secondary stats that you apply to the item.
This information is usefull to people new to the game, or haven't ever made this kinda item before.

When someone says that the Guide is good, this kinda implies that it is worth reading the guide, if people write comments that the guide is rubbish or not correct, Would you read the guide ? The answer is No.. in most cases. So the same can be said about saying the guide is rather good,etc... This kinda information is also helpfull for people that don't want to waste time reading an entire guide to see if its worth reading.
Taking the time out & saying a guide is good, i do think helps the guide rather then hinder.

I did kinda hinted* that i don't mind getting down-rated on my comments, i was just interested in the reason. So thank you for the feed back. But back to my point that hardly anyone has even bothered to answer,

So please pardon me for misunderstanding.
I don't see a lot of valid posts that get downrated, no. And like you, I haven't been the 'victim of such'. I'm pretty sure I understand why when my posts get downrated - mostly because the humor fell flat, I was imprecise or mistaken, or just redundant.

Since you mention "victim", that's where I/we come in.
We see two behaviours that we classify as "abusive" and go to great lengths to prevent or remove and punish. They are targeted voting and rapid voting.

Targeted voting is rating a lot of another users posts. If there's lots of upvotes this is often and indicator that someone has made an alt account or has asked a friend to uprate their stuff. We can see if this is the case, remove the votes, ban the alt accounts and take action on the account responsible.
A lot of downvotes is often an indication of things getting personal between two users and is also something we deal with sternly.

Rapid voting is when a user goes down a page clicking up, down or randomly either simply to get site achievements (and thereby rep) or to be a nuisance. Again we detect this on a daily basis, remove the abusive ratings and punish users taking part in those activities.

If a user takes the time to fully read a comment and then makes a judgement on its value based on the content then personally I'm not too concerned about their reasons for the judgement they make - it's like voting in an election, their voice has been heard.
What I usually point out in threads like these is that you've got to be part of the process if you want your opinion on comments to count.

Essentially, if you think there's been an abuse of the rating system then report it to . If not then just rate things yourself using your own value system and then you help shape the site to be useful for others like you.

This is the thing though, personally I think it's nice to leave a comment on the guide saying that you enjoyed it. I wouldn't downrate that. However I totally understand the view that it's redundant and serves little actual purpose. It's okay for this to be subjective. That's why it's a rating system.

As somebody who recently wrote my first guide, I was very happy to receive a comment from somebody who liked it - positive feedback is actually very useful to a guide writer who's sitting looking at no comments and wondering what people actually thought of it! I was also glad that a few people upvoted that comment to indicate they agreed.

A downvote to a positive comment like that would be implying you didn't like the guide and so would not help the guide at all (unless you actually didn't like it, in which case a comment saying why would be helpful, not just downvoting somebody who had something nice to say!)

Btw this is from point of view of a guide with no or very few comments, obviously I see there's not much point in loads of "I liked it" kind of comments on a guide. But even then downvoting them comes across as negative feedback on the guide itself rather than the comment, which may well put an author off - I'm quite thinskinned and it'd certainly put me right off.

On the general topic of votes, the problem is that they're up to each voter's choice :P People downvote because they disagree (esp. on class-related spell/item pages) or just think that this is incorrect - maybe even just because someone else downvoted the comment already for some reason.
I've noticed on some comments that I crossposted to 2-3 related pages that votes can go in completely different directions on either page, it depends on who visits which.

This is what i posted today.... the guide itself didn't have a link to the item in question, & the entire thread also didn't have a link. Yet it gets down-voted, perhaps i'm missing something about giving correct information. Or is this a case of someone clicking away at random down-votes.. hehe

There is no limit to the number of eggs you can turn in each day

Any suggestions on how i can improve adding a quick link to a item, that someone hasn't actually done? ...or should i not bother to add this link ?

Because the egg is mentioned AND linked twice in the actual guide, under the "Neutral to Friendly" tab. "Great Netherwing Egg Hunt" and the "Gathering dailies" subsections.

Your comment repeats the information clearly stated in the guide itself. That means it has zero use, and the fact you make suggestions without reading the (entire) guide is something I can definitely see as annoying to other people (especially the guidewriter).

I'm sorry if the above comes of as harsh, it's not my intention. You should realize though that people who write those guides put a lot of effort and work into making them as useful and complete as possible and do a lot of research on the subject. It's always possible for a guidewriter to have missed information, and most will be very thankful that you are pointing it out so they can add it and improve their guide.
You should however, always read the entire guide AND double check, before you make a comment claiming there is information missing.

Thats not really valid, since the link isn't to the Netherwing Egg.. & the guide states:
One-Time Quests,

Note this is subjective: not everyone will actually look into all the information, when they don't need to. If he actually linked the egg then it wouldn't be valid. So no this isn't clearly stated unless you click the link. At no time did this person make a link direct to the actual item, that would save you time looking at the entire Guide.

I can clearly see Netherwing Egg linked twice, and a very clear description about the first time, and repeatable quest regarding them.

When someone gives you feedback on a question, and tries to help you, it would be nice to listen to what he says instead of getting defensive and stubborn.
