Vanilla defense cap?

The defense cap, what a wonderful thing. Often mistaken, misunderstood, or misused. The formula from many reputable sites will tell you this equation: (your level)*5+140 This equation was formulated because mobs 3 lvls higher than you (ie: "skull" raid bosses) have a chance to crit you by 5.6%. Every 1 point of defense decreases your chance to be hit
and
critically hit by 0.04%. 140*0.04=5.6
Thus, lvl 60 cap is 440, 70=490, and 80=540. Correct? Well my question is: Why is the cap so high for level 60? When were vanilla-day tanks considered raid ready for ZG/MC/BWL/AQ?
If the cap was 440 @ lvl 60 in vanilla days, why is this number almost impossible to obtain without using BC and WotLK enchants? Warrior's
T2
puts you at 420ish,
T2.5
doesnt even break you of 399 and not even the
T3
can break you of the 440 mark.

I can guarantee that no combination of tank gear (while not gimping threat and other important stats like stam and strength) will achieve a 440 defense rating in vanilla gear/chants. I play a very serious Pre-BC guild and we clear all content easily, and our main tanks are average 400. I think because of the mechanics, its not so much a cap on defense at 60 anymore, but your mitigation. The main tanks have t2.5 and mitigate almost in the high 60% but they only have 400 def rate so... Would you agree it's more about the +dodge +block+parry items rather than the +def?

The simplest way to talk about Vanilla defense cap, is the fact that there effectively wasn't one. You simply stacked any defense you could, along with any other various tanking stats that you would find on your pertinent gear. If you could indeed achieve an actual "defense cap", like stated, you ended up gimping other stats, reducing the value that you would get from being uncritable. So basically looking at it from a lv60 standpoint, you would just try to get gear with defense, 'cause it happened to have it along with the rest of the tanking stats that you needed.
Edit: Grammar...FFS I wish I could get a damn post done without a single typo or grammar error getting through my proofreading....
