Adhering to the tanking rule: first point of tanking is surviving, threat comes after.

That should be changed to:
The first rule of tanking is not letting other members of your raid die due to controllable circumstances (mobs, not fire). The tanks survival lies on the shoulders of the healer.
I would agree more with Blademeld on this one. Its everyone job not to die to fires. Its the tanks drop to tank correctly in order to survire. AKA use correct gear, and tank in a correct possition, where he will not be kicked out of healing range or need to turn his back to a boss and recieve extra damage.
Cheers,
Hat

I think the truth lies somewhere in between.
Tanks = damage sponge.
You are worthless if you can't take the hits, or you can't keep things on you. It is not one or the other but
BOTH
that a tank must do.
It's all about balance as a tank, endlessly chasing one stat will leave you unwanted.... Who cars if you have 40k HP if you can't keep aggro. Who cares if you dodge 35% if you can't take the one hit that does land.... It's all about balance.

Zakkhar, youre a bad. Exp/hit/dodge etc arnt any good huh?
I love your thorough argumentation.
Yes they arent any good. Stamina > all.
Spoken like a true blue tank.
Im going to assume youre just trolling and youre not really that terrible.

Yea I would agree that threat comes second, but the way many tanks gear it seems like threat doesn't come at all. How much hp should a tank have before they gear to reach exp/hit cap in your opinion?
I for one don't think that stacking pure stam in all the enchants and gems (ignoring socket bonuses no less) is the way to go. Balance is key.

Infinite, I believe in multiple gearsets.

If you don't got iLvl 232+ on all slots, don't gem all stamina. Yes: stamina might give the most by gemming it, but if 90% of the bosses attacks lands on you, your healer is gonna swear a lot behind his/her screen because the tanks hp gose up and down like crazy.
In yellow and reds I try find a X + stamina gem. I go for socket bonus most of the time, then it will be a bit easier to change gear for metas.

This is how a tank's gearing goes:
535 defense
540 defense
23000 hp
30000 hp
and then you stack avoidance or stamina according to your playstyle/what's needed.
No matter how good your avoidance is, if your hp is too low, you'll be one or two shotted, and that's never any good.

Ive found that everything a tank is boils down to two words that encompass it all; Keep aggro.

Can't aggro if you're dead.
Can't heal if you're dead.
Can't nuke if you're dead.
