I wouldn't really call words like s**t w***e and c**t slurs because first,
women use then against each other just as much as men do
, and its not in an affectionate way like some black people use the N word with each other. And secondly
women aren't really a minority
in the same sense that racial minorities and homosexuals are.
Do you know what the definition of a 'slur' is?
An insulting or disparaging remark or innuendo.
I don't want to get into a whole debate about words now btw. I'm just saying that most of the so called slurs we've been using are used interchangeably with other insults that most people wouldn't consider slurs, as they are not always said with the intention of singling out or oppressing women.
For example if I came home from class and said to my fiance "God, my stats professor is such a b*tch" I wouldn't consider that a slur (not that she is btw, she's one of the nicest people you can imagine. I just wanted to take an example that's easy for people to relate to).

As much as I don't want to get into a debate about this, s***, w**** and c*** words aren't used in the same way as b**** and you would be horribly wrong to suggest otherwise. In fact, if you were to use s***, w**** or c*** in the same way as you've described above about your stats professor, I would suggest that you're part of the reason that society in general has a disrespect for women that would result in events like the Steubenville case. If your fiance is nagging you about something, is she being a b****, or a s*** or w**** or c***? Would you want your fiance referred to in those terms?
B**** and the equivalent male term have very specific meaning that have been lost due to their general 'acceptability' in the community (using that word very carefully, because I don't think it's really acceptable at all). The others have a very specific meaning that is still associated with the term when used, and it's incredibly disrespectful to call people (especially females) by those terms unless you're actually trying to frame it in a factual sense.

That's the thing though, they don't always hold the same meaning as their original context. Have you really never used the word b***h before in a causal sense? If this wasn't a thread about feminism, if we were in the Game of Thrones thread, and I said "Wow Cersei Lannister is a b***h" would you even think twice about it?
I think that context matters. No i would not want my fiance referred to in that term, but no more so than I would want somebody calling her an idiot, or any other rude name. Saying anything derogatory about a person is not nice, and while I do think that some terms have a special kind of bad associated with them, I don't think every term we have been talking about lies in that category.
Being sensitive about things like sexism, and racism is a good thing. But there is a point where people take it too far. Yes many of these terms are used in a derogatory way and have harmful social repercussions regarding women. But assuming that every time you hear the word b***h its coming in a misogynistic manner is like assuming that every black man arrested is a victim of racial profiling.
Words only have the power that we give them, intention means a lot when you take these cases into consideration.

If someone were to use a derogatory term about your fiance because she's caused them trouble at work, rank in order how you would want her referred to as:
1) Idiot
2) B****
3) C***
4) S***
5) W****
6) Douche (not sure if this needs to be filtered? Not really that common over here.)
7) Ret***
8) Crazy
9) Lunatic
10) Schizo
11) Nazi

Remember, a woman can be offended just by calling her "Woman". You have to understand, a woman's mind works differently than a man's does. What we say, is what we mean. With a woman, that is not the case.
What Women Say
What Women Mean
We need
I want
Do what you want
You'll pay for this later
We need to talk
I need to complain
Sure...go ahead
You do, and you die.
I'm not upset
Of course I'm upset, you moron!
You're...so manly
You need to shave and you sweat a lot.
Hang the picture there
No, Hang the picture there!
Do you love me?
This is going to be expensive.
How much do you love me?
I did something today you're really not going to like..
You need to learn to communicate.
Just shut up and agree with me.
Yes
No
No
No
Maybe
No
I'm sorry.
You are going to be so sorry.
Can't we just be friends?
There is no way in hell I am going to let any part of your body touch any part of mine, ever again.
I just need some space
...without you in it
I like you but...
I don't like you
Do I look fat in this dress?
We really haven't had a fight in a while
Oh Yes! Right there
Well, near there; I just want to get this over with
There's no one else but you
I am doing your brother
Size doesn't count...
unless I want an orgasm (see above)
So one can only assume, that what they hear, may not be what was actually said either.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##This post was entirely inappropriate for the thread and the forum. An official warning has been issued.

I don't want to get into a big debate about it. I just spent too much energy in this thread already. I see where you are coming from, but I also still think that people need to be a little bit thicker skinned sometimes. Some of the words on that list are generally offensive on their own, but I think assuming that anybody who says b***h is being misogynistic is being overly sensitive, and it just helps to create taboos.

As a woman,
1) Schizo (that's an insult?)
2) Crazy (mean, but I don't really see it as an insult)
3) Nazi (surprisingly mild connotations for the origin)
4) Lunatic
5) Idiot (mean, starting to get insulting)
6) R***** (The first one I'd really find insulting)
7) D*****
8) S***
9) B****
10) W****
11) C***
12) Magician's post

Magician's post was funny. You could just as easily make a post like that making fun of men.
Related.

If it's funny it doesn't belong here. If it's serious it's highly insulting. It's the fact that it was posted in this thread that I find the most distasteful.

You're missing my point. I didn't have an issue with that word. I had an issue with all the other words that you were defending the use of when you said:
I wouldn't really call words like s**t w***e and c**t slurs
@ Jubi - Thanks, I actually find it interesting that 8 and 9 aren't swapped around the other way, or that 'lunatic' ranks above 'idiot'. And yeah, I was struggling to populate the list, actually, mostly because I find it difficult to think of these sorts of things because I don't use them often to know them :P
Publication par
Magician22773
@ Squish, from least offensive, to worst,
1. Lunatic
2. Crazy
3. Schizo
4. Re****
(These could actually be in any order...they really are not what I would call "offensive", unless she actually had a medical, mental disorder...then they would be quite offensive. The one that I, and most others may separate is Re****....depending on if it ends in 'ed' or just 'ard'. One of those is a proper word for a medical condition, one of them is an insult, no matter what.)
5. &*!@#$
6. Idiot
7. Nazi
(Again, any order of these. They are certainly an insult, but not really derogatory...more...childish)
8. B****
9. C***
10. S***
11. W*****
(Now you have reached offensive. Any of these terms is unacceptable.
12. Jubilee.
(That is just a fightin' word there....no questions asked...I would go Medieval on their ass)

This is an example of what I think is being too sensitive. He was obviously just trying to keep the mood light, most of the things he listed were so silly that they couldn't possibly be construed as insulting or oppressive.

I wasn't trying to defend those words. I was just saying I don't think of them as inherently oppressive, especially since women use them just as much, maybe more so, than men. I think s**t, c**t, and especially w***e are extremely offensive, and it's not a word I would ever use in reference to a woman.

If I walked into a bible study and started making jokes about Christians, that would distasteful, and no one would be "overly sensitive" for wanting me to leave. If I went into the abortion thread and started making hanger jokes, that would be out of place as well. There is a time and place for making jokes. That was not it.
@ Jubi - Thanks, I actually find it interesting that 8 and 9 aren't swapped around the other way, I guess I find that S***, while an insult, is more literal in meaning, and is used mostly in a specific context. The three below it I find are used more as general insults,

She thought you were being overly sensitive, you don't. There's really no defined rule about it, so there will have to just be a difference of opinion.
As for threads about the Bible having jokes about Christians... well, maybe you're new here. It's part of the territory. Threads about serious subjects will have the occasional off color joke in it. You have to be able to take those jokes in order to participate in a meaningful way. That's not to say that those jokes are right or wrong, just to say that they will happen.
When you come to debate threads, here, accept that you will be offended. You, of all people, should know that.

I'm not sure about anybody else, but I have no idea who 'she' in this refers to.
So this is what I mean by respect for others. Someone else has asked you not to, fairly politely as well, I'd add, and you've blatantly ignored her and rubbed it in. Suffice to say, I'm not terribly impressed.

What you don't seem to understand is that the actual content of your post is only half the problem, Magician. It's the fact that you seem to have no respect for me or people in this thread who might not like that kind of post. Even after I've said so, you continue with posts that serve no other purpose than to continue to rile me up. That's a lack of respect I find almost worse than the sexism this thread is about.

I think as a moderation team, we've been fairly straightforward in saying that we don't moderate posts that we have been involved in, so to be clear, I'm not going to take any moderator action on this. As a forum user and a member of the community, I will still continue to report inappropriate items in threads I'm involved in, and I would encourage anybody else who thinks that something is inappropriate to do the same.
