Don't really understand why Hunters get to mog to different weapon types

Edit: Just reread the official patch notes. I see it doesn't directly say Hunters, and looks like anybody can change ranged weapon. Just more QQ here I guess. We'll let it die.

It's only the guns and bows, no other weapon types.

It's because a bow/crossbow/gun take up the same slot on a Hunter/Warrior/Rogue: They all count as the same weapon type even if they are named differently. For everything else, weapon type falls there.

now that i think about it, it would be nice to have a volume adjuster for guns.

You look more stylish using a bow.
Also enjoy the sounds of arrows being fired.

I wonder if xmog will change the sound or not.

would be silly to have a bow firing as a gun...

Huh?
One of my alts is a blacksmith with the recipe to make
Tranchant cruel des plans
and i would love to transmog his
Punisseur gurubashi
to look like those axes of old, and your explanation fails to explain why i cant do that.

the gun sounds are perfect.... if you are deaf
I fixed that for you.
Also, think of this as a way to compensate for being able to murder Hunters in PvP with great ease.

Because an Axe is an Axe, and a Mace is a Mace for transmog purpose; but a bow/gun/crossbow all count under the Ranged slot for the purpose of Transmog, but you can't transmog a throwing weapon to look like a crossbow/bow/gun.

One of the biggest things that's obvious with the restrictions being placed on transmog, is that they don't want people to use it to get an edge in PvP, by disguising what spec they are, or appearing to be a different class at a distance. Regardless of whether a hunter is using a bow, a gun or a crossbow, you can tell it's a hunter. But that DK running up on you with 2 axes in hand- is that frost, or a transmogged blood DK? Do you try to have your frost mage root him, or do you want to burn him down? In a BG- quick focus fire the heal...wait...that was a rogue in Tier 8 priest robes- change targets. Not that there aren't other ways to tell, but they don't want people using it to get an edge.

Well if hes wielding two weapons he is definately frost. Either that or he is completely terrible. If they have a two hander they could be any spec. Whether he is wielding an axe, a mace, or a sword, doesn't change the fact he is wielding a two hander.

To be honest, that's kind of a poor argument - a Blood DK would never legitimately dual wield considering they exclusively use 2-handed weapons.
Consider that weapon types, as long as it's like Mace --> Sword (and both are one-handed), it's still easy enough to identify what that player is (If Transmog wasn't smart enough to check how many hands you need to use both weapons and make sure they match, then I would be speechless). There's also other obvious signs (buffs, etc) but that's beside the point. While I can agree it doesn't matter what ranged weapon type the Hunter uses and hence it's okay to have them interchangable for transmog, in the cases of numerous other classes, the message is the same (I could think of a few exceptions like Rogues, due to weapon requirements differentiating the specs).
In short, transmoging melee weapons as long as it's a conversion of same-handed weapons to same-handed weapons is honestly not even remotely problematic. After all, since when did it matter that the Warrior was cleaving your face in with a Sword and not an Axe?
