Still a scam, but as they say, a sucker is born every minute...but don't be too surprised when this comes around to bite you in the ass is all.

No reason you both can't be 'mugs'. Breaking into a house belonging to a guy who would do the same to you is still illegal and immoral. And Blizz deals out punishments for this scam.
Of course, you'd be worse, as your victim could be a straight up bad guy, where as you are trying to legitimize your actions.

Your line of reasoning contains an irrelevant conclusion fallacy. Whether killing a dog is somehow not as bad as some other arbitrary bad act isn't at issue, just like in this case whether you lying in a game is somehow not as bad as lying "in real life" isn't at issue. Whether it is as comparably bad or not, it's still lying and still contains within it the same principles that make lying "in real life" bad.
And just because someone else does a bad thing doesn't make your doing the bad thing any more justifiable.

How is it a scam if what I say and what I do, instigates someone to purchase something in order to make a profit from me? Surely, that makes them the scammer?
Still a scam as you are taking advantage of other people, as well as getting your own item back to sell it again and again, probably through this exact same method.

Yes, I'm taking advantage of other people but only because they think they can take advantage of me.
And I won't be getting my own item back because they would have bought it. Therefore it is now theirs. What they decide to do with it from thereon is up to them.
See, put as many pretty words as you want, but you still scammed them out of it; you made a profit, they didn't, simple as that. But as I said, enjoy it when it comes back to bite you in the ass...because you do realize that the GM's can tell that Character B is yours as well right?

Fortunately, most people agree that one's own profit does not determine morality. If this is how you treat all people in your life, I feel sorry for those who have decided to continue to stick around with you.

I'd do it.
If someone's willing to buy an overpriced item without checking it first just because some randomer out of millions says 'WTB x for y' then it's their own damn fault, go profit from them.

You can't buy your own items from the AH. The GM would know.
