Just means they are pre-loading a part of what they can, so it's not such a burden come patch day.

My background downloaded just popped up and is attempting to download. What does this mean for 3.1?
o_o;;;;
Nothing whatsoever. They just put a new build on the PTR, what, yesterday?

usally it means the patch is soon within the next couple weeks but with the big changes coming with this patch dont expect this like was said beofre its just downloading what they want us to so patch day is not as stressfull

Nah, these don't indicate when the patch will arrive. When major patches are in the process of being released, Blizzard tends to have release small chunks of it in bits by bits so that when the real patch comes you don't have to download as many gigs.

so even 555mb is small :S man must be a massive one incoming, and people says weeks? does that mean it 'will not' be this tuesday for example?
Correct. It's more likely to be late March or April even.

Usually the background downloader will start to download content two or three weeks before a major patch like 3.1 is applied.
Blizzard plans to release the patch at the beginning of April if PTR testing should be finished by then. If not, the patch will be postponed and the Noblegarden event will be delayed.

this is just a pre download, you might finish the download, but you still wont get into 3.1 until it's live
