My realm seems to be very low on shamans and I often see so many disc priests I curse the air around me. (My main is a disc priest).
BL is so good and a raid without it feels so dibilitating in tight situations. Pain supression and Gaurdian spirit are equal to BL IMO since you want to have more CD moves to save tanks from huge hits like the mimiron's plasma or algalon. For healing, Shamans are for some alot easier to play then a priest when movement isn't a heavy necesity. However, Priest are arguably the funnest to heal as, since you can excell in any situation at the expense of having to work twice as hard.
Personally I believe no raid should be without a shaman or a priest.
What I would do is find out what your guild is lacking in and level that.
Or you can level the class you have the most fun as.
Either route is fine.
(off topic: my guild has only 1 DK.)

I am currently lvling a shamman and I really like him. he is lvl 57 and my priest is lvl 49.
I had been debating for awhile wether to lvl my shammy or priest and finaly chose shammy.
But not I hear things like "shammies arent awful, but they arent great"
while I also hear "Priests are the best healers in the game, and in shadow they are the best dps hybrid class"
Anyone here can reassure me I made the right choice? ( I really like my shammy so I dont want to hear "just lvl your priest" and its not reassuring to hear "if you like him you're fine) =D
Im planning to go ele or resto for arenas in 2's at 80. But it would also be nice to hear about instancing and bgs and other types of arena too.
Sounds like you made the mistake of visiting your class forum on the official WoW boards. Every class is the worst class ever, and every other class is overpowered. The only quality info you might find there is stuff about optimization. If you want to know what's so great about Shamans, just play one, and I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Not really related to the topic, but I agree with this 100%. My Pally is Prot/Ret, and my Priest is Disc/Shadow, so no matter what someone needs, as long as I'm not saved, I can do it since I have Melee and Ranged DPS, Tank, and Heals all with just 2 characters. Very rewarding.
Hm... This can be nice if you like to alternate styles/classes, but on this matter nothing beats Druids. Tree, Cat, Bear and Moonkin cover it all in one. No other class can do that.
About which bring more utility, beware. If you think about parties, high-end is a laughable term. In an overgeared group, Heroism/Bloodlust/Totem buffs beat a Priest's buffs by far. On the correct gear levels for determined content, i do not know if you are so right. A priest can overall extend the survival of all the team (Which on a blue geared DPS caster may even be an issue for some fights), and Spirit for overall better mana. Discipline excels in covering tank flaws - and multiple times i've seen this, most notably the wipefest on Sarth3D by tank deaths that only stopped when me, the Disc priest, got assigned to the tanks.
However, a fully decked character with few mana issues, and the huge requirements on AoE fights really bring up the Shaman in you. You won't ever get the mitigation of Discipline, rellying on brute force heals - but still very powerful numbers, which Disc can't get. Sort of on-par with Holy, patches giving an edge to one or another but more or less balanced.
I think we can easily say that to start (gear-level-wise), Priests are overall more effective, but Shaman quickly catch up. However, do note that efficient priesting requires a lot of spells to master.
If you like to heal heal heal and have the spell for everything you can be hit with, Priest has an edge. When variety doesn't concern you (Although Shaman still have a fair arsenal), you're left to personal taste, and endgame goals.

If you choose a class based on how it currently performs at 80, it will almost invariably have changed by the time you get to 80. Even from month to month, classes change a LOT. If you re-rolled ret in 3.1 when they were oppressively overpowered, by the time you hit 80, the burst will have already been nerfed. This is why it is
ignorant
to choose a class based on how it currently performs at 80.
Exept from the major dps-boost ret-pallas got a while ago, changes usually go quite slow so I dont see the harm in looking abit on how max-level characters do right now when deciding what class to level.
Shaman healing: Best raidhealer in the game atm. Outshines holypriests by far (face it, holypriests isnt what they ones was)
Shaman dps: Compared to a shadowpriest you will do better in fight were you can stand still and nuke alot, but most fights require alot of running around so a little disadvantige for shamans here.
(Btw, shamans will always be needed in groups/raids because of totems/bloodlust)
Priesthealing:
Holy: Ok raidhealing, but not as good as they used to be. Raids go much better if shamans raidheals instead of holypriests IMO.
Disc: best tankhealer in the game right now. Even better then paladinhealers.
Shadow: Great mobility while still keeping dps up, huge survivability.
So:
For tankhealing or dpsing Id go priest
For raidhealing and soloing (groupquests etc) and raidbuffs Id go Shaman
