I don't have the heirloom chest yet, but I'm working on it.
Here are my plans, for anyone who is interested. Please feel free to make suggestions:
Try to hit as close to 0 XP at level 51.
Take a /played record as my baseline played time.
Repeatedly run Alterac Valley from level 51 to level 58.
Take a /played to determine how long those 7 levels took.
At level 58, quest for approximately half a level through the well-laid-out quest chains in Hellfire while wearing both heirloom shoulders and chest.
Again, take a /played to determine how long the half-level took me.
Return to AV and finish out leveling to 59.
Again, take a /played to determine how long the half-level took me.*
Continue leveling to 80.
Take a /played and determine final leveling time.
The break at 58 is to try and determine what the "XP per hour" difference is between AV and questing, to see if in fact it is faster to level through questing if you have the heirloom bonus.

TLDR, I went from 71-80 on my druid in AV. got two of the pvp items before 80, the ram, tabbard and pike. IMO If we are winning, its faster than questing losing is horrible though.

On a server in which owns AV just about every single time, I think I found my way to lvl my priest. After 5 times through, I don't think I can stomach another pass at the Northrend quests.

Yes, it is a little much. In AV anyways.
I got 15% of one level of experience (level 73) from one. But that was only because we stomped them. (Got the perfection achievement)
After I figured this out, I decided I would level this way, while also completing a few quests while in the queue.
But the fact that you get more XP from it kinda makes sense. It's the largest BG there is. It has the most people, and it was intended to take the longest amount of time.
The other upside to it is honor. If you win you are almost always garaunteed 1k honor. I have a 74 Druid (My main ATM) that started leveling in AVs at 71. In 3 levels I gained 50k honor.
All I know is, I'm not complaining. I love it, and it's fun. It takes less work, and after the 70 levels of pure questing, I'm enjoying this alternative to leveling.

The down side (another), are all of that lvl 72-79's that swarm AV now, making it a lot less enjoyable for 80's (I'm not talking 'bout that sickos that love ganking...). And it also brought tons of AFK campers, that want easy XP. And it's hard to collect em all ^_^

I do agree with this. There really should be a level 80 bracket for AV - and they should add a mechanic to the AFK reporting that removes XP for the duration of that BG if the AFK flag sticks and you get the "cow".
By the way, anyone wanting to level from 51 up, AV can really stink at lower levels. The 51-60 bracket on my server loses far more than we win - and we're Alliance.
Despite that, in about 2 hours /played I've gotten 3.5 levels.
It's not that far off for av. Plus you are gaining money or chance for rare loot = gear. That and then maybe gathering profession.
Don't overlook the fact that you'll actually wind up with
more
gold leveling through PvP. You get around 1.5 to 2 times as much gold for a quest done at 80 when it doesn't reward any XP. Plus, as I stated previously, you'll likely have enough honor to have your full Hateful set upon hitting 80 if you start early enough.
