I don't have a 'higher' education. I work for a fabrication company a few years ago. When I started working here they put a broom in my hand and told me to sweep the floors. After like 2 months they decided to put me in research and development. I had three bosses, all engineers, and thier boss is an associate professor at Washington State University. Anyway, after a while the guy working on his doctorate got fired for not being smart enough. I got his job, but kept working for the other two engineers. Later, one of the two got fired for not being smart enough, also. That left one engineer as my boss, between this super genious and I. Anyway, I just got news today that he decided to leave the company and go to a new one. That means that I will now work directly for a man that has more power and intelligence that anyone I've ever spoken to.
I'm posting this to ask: What is going to happen? Am I going to run this section of the company now? Will they can the project and transfer me over to middle management in production? Will they fire me? I'm kind of last man standing. I don't want to underestimate myself, but I'm not an engineer or a physicist. I might be trusted to do the job of one, but sooner or later someone will remember that I barely have a high school diploma. If they look close they will see I printed it out of my printer at home.
What do I do? <panic>
Basically nothing will happen. If they find you lack the knowledge of the post you are at they will just pay for your courses and have get you fully certified with the posting.
lol You will not get fired.

The first sensible thing I've seen this person say.
If anything MyTie, they know you know intuitively how stuff works. And if they ask you about dynamics, and you say "I don't know, where can I learn?" they will undoubtedly answer "College. We'll pay you to go." This is a pretty standard behavior for companies. They foot the bill in the short term, but they know that if you stay with them, they'll get their money's worth and more.
And no, I'm not sure why you would assume you need a PhD in Engineering for the position. Usually an BE will suffice.

But if they fired people for not being smart enough, what makes him think that they would put you through classes paid for by them?
MyTie is obviously intelligent (just not intelligent enough to attend college ;P). He can already point to improvements and such that he's done (i.e. real world experience) at his place of employment, some of which he's done by intuition.
There's little reason for me to believe that he would be fired, much less put in a managerial position, if he can say all he needs is the formal education.

Yeah, they wouldn't pay for my college.
Why so sure?

2) The military already does.
So, you're in college currently...? There shouldn't be a problem then, should there?

Courses? What? A doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or Physics?
To Skyfire: Most of the stuff that I say are sensible, some of it is just in a second form of sentences that allows people to profind the meaning of it, but I'll try to keep it as straight forward as possible. Thank you for reconsidering reading my post. ^^ and I apologyze for before.
To MyTie: There are Fast Pace courses that allows you to be certified with the career in 1 year. Most high standard companies do that. As for PhD or Masters. You'll have to do that on your own.
These studies are offered (or should be offered) to you if you are bound to work with the company and or they see that you are desperate about the post/or are good at it but not certified.

I'm not in college for either physics nor mechanical engineering. I'm in for psychology. This doesn't relate to my job at all. The only reason I have the job is because I know how to do this stuff.
Kind of like.... I dunno... I just get this stuff....
Now, the engineers can speak in terms of MEASUREMENTS, which they learned in college. They can tell you the density of the blocks, and the resistance to compression in terms of PSI, etc. You couldn't do this. Well, you could, but you couldn't really speak thier language.
Why are you in for psychology, as a curiosity, if you're working as an engineer (more or less)? Would the military pay for a second degree of interest?
As for "just getting it", yeah, I understand.
As for the last part, I'll be able to speak their language soon (already started)! It's not a very difficult language, imo, unless you're mathematically deficient (even then, a lot of engineering is playing around with pegs, so to speak). You'll get through this.
