Hey all,
I've been specced for healing (Disc, to be precise) since around Level 50 and have slowly but surely gotten used to most of the little kinks and tactics for Party healing on my way to 80. Now that I finally hit the cap a day back, I decided to try my hand at some of the easier Heroics (VH, Utgarde Keep and Nexus).
While I was doing exceptionally well up until that point, it seems I've hit a sudden wall; I was able to comfortably keep everyone alive with a Shield and PoM on the tank coupled with a few Flash Heals, but suddenly the Tank is taking repeated 10-16k hits, mobs eat through my PW:S in a single strike and I have to constantly spam Flash Heals and Penance coupled with a Renew ticking in the background in tandem just to keep the Tank out of the red, and this is on
trash pulls
.
Now I know I'm
not perfectly geared yet
(the Offhand is actually
Seal of Valgarde
), but there's no gear upgrades right now apart from a few crafted pieces that I can get from non-Heroics. My spell power hovers around 1600 with the Inner Fire buff, for Glyphs I have PW:S, Flash Heal and PoH, and I use Clique + a Grid-like Addon so reaction times aren't the real issue.
Does anyone have a few pointers I could keep in mind or know of things I could be doing wrong? I'm a bit intimidated right now to join any further runs until I've figured out what the core issue is, so any help is appreciated C: thank you!

Not playing a Priest in heroics (yet) but as a Druid I went through the same thing just recently. A lot depends on the tank and how well he is geared. I ran a few hc with tanks that were mostly in blues and it was almost impossible to keep everyone up, in harder boss fights I could barely keep the tank up and if a dps got aggro (by adds for example) it meant certain death for him.
Then I made a few runs with the same group of dps but with a different tank (almost full epic with 1-2 blues left). It suddenly was very easy, the tank was experienced (and crit-immune!) and my HoTs were almost always sufficient to keep him alive so I could spend time healing dps when they stepped in to AoE or things like that. My Druid is still mostly in blues and even has 1-2 greens left (1400 sp self-buffed) and with a good tank we tend to fly through heroics (so far, haven't done all of them yet).
Bottom line: Get a good tank. With a good tank healing should be no issue at all, even in green/blue.
Oh and also get good dps ;) they should all be able to pull >1.5k dps for heroics at least, >2k is better. Killing stuff faster means it deals less damage. That helps out the healer a lot, too.

I've had the same issues. My first experience healing as disc in Heroic, tank was bad, dps constantly getting aggro, people dieing left right and centre, and me wondering what on earth I was doing wrong thinking I should be able to heal them regardless. Shattered me thinking I should be a better healer! Spoke to some other disc priests, reassured me is not all my fault :P
I agree with the above post completely :) he people in the group make all the difference After a few runs in UK normal mode with a good tank (to get my confidence back) we tried the same dungeon in Heroic mode and was much better. Made me feel very relieved!

Thing is with heroics. normally, the tank and dps are just as geared as you are and with tanks, that makes all the difference! Hence if they are under def cap then you are going to struggle left right and center. Keep at it tho. Your stats are fine for entry heroics.
remember, pain suppression!

Tanks should NEVER.
I will repeat:
NEVER
do Heroics without being Defense capped.
I leveled my Priest as Holy until I got near Heroics, where I switched to Discipline. I was leveling with a friend, a Protadin, all the way to 80, so we really knew each other well, and he was VERY insistent that he not do Heroics before being Def capped.
Now, part of this may be due to you having bad tanks. However, you have to remember: these are Heroics. They're supposed to be harder than your regular instances. You'll find that you really have to be on your toes.
I remember having several people die under me, and having very close calls to wipes while re-learning bosses on Heroic mode. But it's part of the game, and it's why progression is so much fun. You'll realize that you'll have to do EVERYTHING to keep people alive, until your gear starts to get better.
Now, in mostly Naxx gear, I pretty much stand there and do absolutely nothing while doing Heroics -- a PW:S on the tank, and a Penance when he loses about 5k health (which usually pops at least one or two Divine Aegis), and I'm standing around with nothing to do.
For right now, try to always have your tank with PW:S. Use Penance nearly every cooldown -- it's very mana efficient for how much it heals. In between, use Flash Heal; don't spam it, but use it as a small boost. Remember -- we spike heal quite a bit, and if a tank is at 50% health when Penance is almost off CD, don't waste a Flash Heal. Keep PoM out -- either toss it to the tank if Penance is on cooldown, or to a DPS who is in the middle of taking damage.
Other than that, good luck! :D Heroics are tough when starting out, but are a lot of fun as you slowly gear up through them.

Actually, the starter heroics i did when my tank was 10 under def rating. He is a DK. The healer had no trouble keeping me up. However i must stress that the heroic Def cap is 535! for raids its 540. So ask him his def and check the armory. if he is over 10 def off, don't take him.

No offense, but one should know that
there is no defense cap
, before giving advice to tanks. :p
To OP:
Sounds like you're doing it right. Not your fault. Problem is, you can't check tanks' stats, so either compile yourself a friendlist of good tanks... or just don't bother, healing challenges are fun. :D
QFT
OP you are doing fine. And healing is supposed to be a challenge otherwise it becomes boooring :P
You're right - we should find another name for it as it's the opposite of a cap... It's the bare minimum of what a tank should have. Only a DK tank will ever be only at 540. Pallies and warriors will usually have more than that :P
