I started playing right before TBC came out. First off, I was a big fan of paladins in d&d, always liked the holy warrior set-up. And at the time, leveling a paladin in WoW was challenging and unique; I loved the the whole seal/judgment set up.
As I leveled I fell in love with holy, nuking heals on the tanks was a lot of fun.
Now that I have been playing for 3 years, I've come to love pallies in pvp. I feel like I have so much control over the fight, no matter what spec I am.

Tankoo, the outbreak you're talking about is the plague that was set up right before the launch of WotLK. The plague got to be so contagious to the point where it was really hard to prevent it. Any class that could cleanse diseases pretty much had to spam it sometimes in order to get rid of it. I myself gave up spam-cleansing everyone and since I was ret at the time when people were claiming it was OP(It was, just a little, :D) I decided to "purge" a few zombies here and there. It was quite fun wtfpwning a bunch of them until I was turned into one...then I infected more people!
As far as why I made a Paladin:
The idea of a 2-handed weapon using holy warrior sounded awesome to me and since their lore is so immersive in WoW I decided to give it a shot. I made one right around the beginning of BC. It was quite hard leveling sometimes but I enjoyed the fact that I was a plate wearer that could heal himself. I turned him into a tank at 70 and tanked Kara countless times but never really got much farther than that unfortunately. Small guilds + drama ftl.
Anywho, after my guild split I kinda ditched tanking and gathered the S2 set alongisde S4 gloves, and
Ol' Trusty
. Much later on when 3.0.2 came out ret paladins rejoiced everywhere. What Blizz did to ret paladins is pretty much exactly what I always wanted for the class. Now I'm currently 80 casually running Ulduar here n' there and it's still really enjoyable being a ret paladin. (b^_^)b

I started playing a Palading in Vanilla because a friend of mine told me they were the best. I later realized he was joking.
Thought is was funny to have me play the most under-powered class in the game. (/sigh)
But whatever, I loved the class, despite how weak we were back then.
We were basically just buffers and cleansers.
(5 minute blessings, 40 man raids...)
Since then Blizzard managed to fix the class, and now it's pretty awesome. It plays nothing like it did back then, but all the stuff I liked back then is still around... only perfected (nearly).
The only thing I didn't like, once I got into it, was the fact that I was forced to play Alliance to be a Paladin.
Thankfully, once TBC was introduced, we could choose a faction, like the other classes.
(The Horde is just so much more interesting...)
I wasn't into lore then, but now I've been reading up on it and it makes the class even more awesome.
Holy warriors; a mix of a Warrior and a Priest; brute force mixed with holy wrath; wielding the holy light for a battle situations, both to heal and cause damage.
More of a "Hero" class then the others; by which I mean: by simply being a Paladin, you would be considered a hero among the people.
(Speaking from a lore point of view.)
They are pure awesomeness, to be hones ;-)

In RPGs, i was always on the side of evil. Not necessarily any evil forces, demons or such stuff, just not the do-gooder. I always played thief/rogue class for this purpose (assassin sometimes, but that just isnt it).
I hated paladins and all the like, tbh.
Then the BC came, with the blood elves and their rape of the light. I couldnt refuse that, I rolled paladin and then i found just how great the class is. Ive even fallen in love with holy and helping and healing was no longer against my mind.
PALADIN CLASS TOTALY CHANGED MY LIFE!

Versatility, couldn't care less about the lore.
Paladins and Druids are hands down the single best classes to roll in the game, no matter how many times we get hit by the allmighty nerfstick there is always 2 other specs that are viable and fun to play.
^ this for me. I'd sit and stare at the Character Creation screen for hours every time I wanted to roll a new character, and finally I came down to rolling a Paladin. If I wanted to tank, I could tank. Heal, I could heal. Etc.
I just wanted plenty of options. I felt like if I rolled a hybrid, I was rolling three classes at once.
Though I do like the whole holy avenger thing. WAAAYYY back before I understood WoW at all (it was my first MMO, and I just saw it as an RPG), I rolled a Paladin because of the little description box in the Character Creation screen -- describing them as both able to attack and bolster their allies. That just seemed like a cool concept. This Paladin only made it to about level 10, and there were plenty of other characters rolled, but I finally came back to the Paladin for the above paragraph.
