Guild applications are stupid yes. But they are created by people who play the game and aren't part of the game.

As you said, it's a game. Not everyone finds the same things fun that you do.
Some people
enjoy
organizing a bunch of other people to defeat a common goal. Some people
enjoy
putting together a website. There are a ton of people who put those together as a hobby, whether WoW related or not. It's not work if you're having fun.
As for guild applications? I don't have an issue with them. Each guild has its own unique atmosphere. Asking prospective new members to answer a couple of questions about themselves and their character is one of the few things you can do to insure this person is a good fit for the atmosphere you've already got going on. Invite the wrong person and you've got chaos and a lot of unhappy people on your hands.
Is it really work to take 10 minutes to fill out a questionnaire for a group you want to join? I'd much prefer that than someone who runs around Dalaran inviting anyone that doesn't already have a guild tag without so much as a, "hello."
It's a game. Do you really want to spend your leisure time with a bunch of people you have nothing in common with and just plain don't like?

I have to disagree that filling out a form with irrelevant information brings only the best players to assist the guild. I find that guild applications are mostly just a way of keeping people who want to join a guild busy to reduce the in-game tells.

It doesn't get the best players into your guild - I never said that it does. I said that it's
one
way to
help
.
Speaking as someone that's had to go through those applications, the information isn't irrelevant. It's very basic information about yourself, your character, and what you're looking to get out of the game. If that's not relevant information, I'm not sure what is.
Also, you're correct in that it's a way to reduce in game tells. People have the worst timing sometimes. ;)

When I sit down to raid its nice to know the other 24 people on the other end will at least respect the fact that I'm wasting 3.5 hours of my night to work with them in accomplishing cetain tasks.
If you consider it a waste of time, why do you do it?

I think the game becomes more of than a hobby when you start raiding everyday 6pm-2am with a hardcore progression guild. I know they must like the game and all. But are world firsts that important? You can't put it on your resume.

I mean then also making websites for guilds and make applications for joining is seriously extreamly ridicolous when you think about it, myself I've always thought that kind of stuff just gets over the limit, a game should just be simply made for fun and don't be like you sit up at 3:00 AM while 100% focused on the screen having the fear of doing everything right so you don't wipe
This will stop being necessary when they stop making content in which it is possible to fail due to one member being an incredible idiot.
But I also get the feeling this thread was made due to a denied application.

Ever think that they call it wasting time cause you know...it is? It is a freakin videogame....you are playing to WASTE TIME. If your doing anymore than that then well, you take the game a bit to seriouslyIt's a hobby.
There are hobbies that are oft taken far more seriously than the general population of this game.

I've seen guild leaders, or mere guild officers and class leaders, feel a sense of entitlement or self-proclaimed rights in the real world simply based on their WoW status. Some people think WoW is important, those are the ones you need to avoid.
Personally, I believe guild applications are in order as a symbolic sign of interest. Showing your will to at least spend 10 minutes proving your interest in joining a guild.
PS. In my time as a class leader I took joy in bringing recruits on possible suicide missions that could only be done by seasoned players matching the high standards of the addicts I used to play with. Anything less would mean high repair bills, the minimum sacrifice one has accept when raiding. Regardless of the recruit's success I'd be entertained, because that's what a game is all about. Your own personal enjoyment and if you haven't got that, you're playing the wrong game.
