What's the point of Goblin/gnomish engineering anymore?

As gnomish and Goblin haven't gotten any gameplay affecting items from...I think Cataclysm was the last time, The specializations don't really need to exist anymore, and to be frank I don't think they needed to exist to begin with.
They do not "Enhance" what an engineer can make, they only serve to ensure engineers cannot use all engineering items. Leatherworking, tailoring, And Blacksmithing specializations were removed despite the lore and reasons behind them, because Leatherworkers, Tailors, and Smiths were tired of being only able to do some of what their profession was capable of.
Why is engineering any different?
It's especially painful because Gnomish X-ray specs and Gravity well are still nice to have up to one hundred, and Goblin has nothing to compare. The Personal World destroyer and The bomb rocket are both non-goblin exclusive.
It's just silly...Why with all the changes and updates, has this stayed so firm?

Good point. I went Goblin on my Hunter back in the day and recently went Gnomish on my new Death Knight main.. All of the Goblin Exclusives are account wide companions/mounts and only require Goblin Engineering to make- not to use. I have always been against this movement towards homogeneity that WoW has been going in.. I'd rather see more exclusives and perks for profession specializations instead of just mashing everything together. I like options, it makes my character feel more personalized.
That being said- I'm really not regretting going Gnomish this time.

It's one of those legacy things, they probably had big ideas back in the day.
To me the only difference is where I want my Ultrasafe transporter to drop me off.
