What's the minimum expected DPS in a heroic?

Hello, a quick question here, I'd just like to know what is the expected DPS nowadays in a heroic when one has normal instance and reputation gear. The intent isn't to yell at anyone who does less than X dps but I'd like to know when we fail fights if that was due to a lack of dps or something we didn't understand in the fight.
Thanks.

9-12k on a level 85 training dummy is probably the best way to gauge whether you're ready for heroics.
In practice, you'll find yourself doing 4.5k to 8k because there's nothing even remotely close to a training dummy fight in the Cata heroics.

4.5k is way too low. I do 5 to 6k single-target dps as a tank and I'm sure better tanks than myself do even more. Thanks for the answers so far, more opinions?

4.5k might look low, but with all the target swapping and moving in/out of fires, I don't think it's unacceptable.

A lot of boss fights are movement heavy, like heroic Altairus in Vortex Pinnacle. It's highly variable.
More important than your individual DPS is staying alive. You do zero DPS when you're dead. Likewise, if the healer has to divide his attention between the tank and a DPS that is standing in the fire, odds are he'll lose one, if not both.
To my knowledge, there are relatively few DPS races that are extremely stringent in heroics, and no enrage timers. Being able to quickly switch and acquire targets, stay alive, and not break crowd control are more important.
as a healer I couldent agree more. these new heroic bosses, along with many trash packs, offer new ways for dps to die.
my heals are smaller and slower then in wotlk, it's very easy for the dps to receive more damage then I can heal.
if a dps pulls 5-6k in a fight, and stays alive and avoids all the avoidable aoe and add damage. I am pleased

Anything above 7k, but it highly depends on the fight. A lot of bosses create a lot of stress, like Altairus, to the healers. We took around 6m. to kill him, I was pulling 9k+ and the other guildies somewhere around 6-7k. Even though we killed him fine, if we all did a couple of ks more of dps, it wouldn't be so bad on the healer.

Ranged should be much higher, I run with a survival hunter in all 349 who routinely pulls 9-10k on bosses.
That's because he's a Survival Hunter. It's a known fact at the moment Survival Hunters are topping the meters in heroics (and some raid encounters).

To be honest, that's because you are a tank, and with the new expansion, everyone will have pretty weak gear and low avoidance stats and so on. This results in Vengeance stacking up absurdly fast resulting in high tank dps.
And 4.5k is too low depending on the fight and the class/spec that pulls it. It's a matter of analysis.

That > DPS.

While this is true
you aren't going to kill that sapper at full health doing 4k DPS.
You arent going to be able to stand beside him doing that much DPS for a ramp up.
It is not going to die before the floor is covered in crap.
If you aren't doing close to 7k, you need to go meet your mandatory hit/exp caps, reforge for itemization priority, enchant and gem your gear, grind normal dungeon rep for gear from rep vendors, and research your class and play out some scenarios to increase your potential damage output.
