Hey Guys,
I've been away from the game for a while because it was a bit stressful on my MacBookPro.
This weekend I bought an eMachine from TigerDirect with Intel Celeron Dual-Core, 2GHz, w/ 2GB RAM.
I know Vista is supposed to need more memory to run things, but what about Windows 7? Microsoft will be releasing a free version 5/5/09.
Would the game run better if I downgrade to XP or upgrade to 7? I hear 7 is a lot faster.
Thanks!

Yes, the game will likely run smoother if you downgrade to XP.
What video card are you using?
Can't comment on Windows 7 as I have not used it.

yeah but ram is cheap. and I think you would find a fully patched version of XP requiring more ram than 128mb these days.
Just sitting idle in dalaran, my task manager says Wow.exe is using about 770mb, I run very few mods.

from the early benchmarks that I've seen vista is actually faster in some titles. the ones where win7 takes the lead its by a very marginal amount; not enough to justify upgrading the OS imho. It seems that most that use the latest builds of win7 feel that the OS itself is leaner and faster at times but gaming seems about the same.
COMPLETELY wrong. The benchmarks from RC1 Vista were slightly faster than the Vista out now, but it had so many things wrong with it that you were lucky if you could boot up twice in a row without errors. Windows 7 that's "available" right now (which I am currently running, version 7077 ;D) has extremely higher benchmarks than the current retail version of Vista, mainly because it lacks all of the bogus software that Micrisift likes to load on thier operating systems. As of right now though, Windows 7 actually even has slightly higher benchmarks than XP, and is actually forseen as the XP killer. We will see, but imo, get rid of that nasty Vista and go with XP, unless you feel a little wild, then go find the Windows 7 ;)

Ok. Since I know nothing about how to downgrade OS, I guess I'll wait for Microsoft to release the free Windows7 on 5/5.

OK, to start off...
The only time when Windows runs as fast as it should run, is right after you install it. Upon the second boot (well, maybe the third if you're lucky) some drastic changes will be made to our beloved registries, and Windows will take from 30 seconds to 5 minutes to function normally. No biggy, but if you need much time, go OS X.
Vista, however, has even a bigger problem. Now, it won't take from 30 seconds to 5 minutes to function normally, no. It won't. Vista is just slow. It eats about 1GB RAM, and because of that, you need 4GB RAM to benefit from 3GB RAM, while XP only eats about 128MB RAM. Unless you're running thousands of applications in the background of course.
My advise? XP.

But still, compare 128MB RAM to 1GB.
Indeed :P
But for low-end computers, like mine (Core Solo 1.6GHz, Intel GMA 950, 1GB RAM) Windows XP still beats Windows 7.
Holy crap... Win98 anyone?

My MacBookPro (1.8GHz, 1GB RAM) ran the game fine. ...Until my right fan started going nuts everytime I played it.
My new CPU has a 2GHz dual core and 2GB RAM. I think the cheapest option would be to buy extra RAM, right? I could upgrade to 4GB for $44 off tigerdirect, where downgrading my OS to XP would cost even more. (Seeing as how I don't own any PCs and would have to buy a retail version).
Or maybe I'll unbox this computer and it'll play the game as smooth as my laptop did.

Vista is slow, but what the hell is this pile of steaming crap you tried to pawn off as some kind of knowledge? Vista does not eat 1GB. You have some system issues if yours is. Besides that it keeps things in cashe when you start opening and closing alot of &*!@, thereby improveing relaunch speed. If RAM needs to be freed up then it if freed up for applications that are run.
Win7 works the same and it is a much suprior method to XP. But that doesnt make up fro it being a slow POS. XP will give you slightly higher framerates even with the 'fixed' drivers now for Vista/ Win7

I have a slightly outdated computer at home, but upgraded with decent gfx card and 2 gig ram. Had XP on it, wow ran fine, got too much crap on the computer after a while, so decided to try out Vista since I had to clean up and reformat anyway. Vista made wow go at approximately half speed of what it did on XP right before the reformat. Tossed Vista, back to XP. Totally groovy again. Win7 open beta came along, so I installed that on a second partition, 64-bit to boot, have been running wow on Win7 ever since. It's a little better than XP, frameratewise I'd say about 15-20%, but compared to Vista... Oh my. It's a whole other world.
Appr. specs for my comp are Athlon 64 1800+, Nvidia 7900 GTS I believe, 2 gig ram, Raptor 70 gig system disk, slow arse WD 300 gig data disk (OS on system disk, WoW from data disk).
So in conclusion, for moderately old, but upgraded systems: Win7 > XP >>>> Vista.
