I greatly prefer moonkins to feral, and in terms of DPS moonkins almost always come out on top.
I don't know why someone would make a remark like that. Must not know much about druids.

Truth. Moonkin dps is awesome if you gear it right - +spelldamage and +spellcrit with enough Int to make it last. On more than a few occasions I've caused elemental shamans, rogues, and mages to eat their words, hehe.

On my mage, I don't mind Boomkins, especially for that aura for 5% spell crit chance (pushes mine up close to 40% for fire spells) But as with any class there are idiots that spoil the rep for all. Have a lvl 70 boomkin in my guild that for some odd reason has it in her head that she is still a healer (formerly resto druid) So most of her gear is +healing with +healing gems in it. Whats worse is now that the patch came out and her +spell damage went up, she actually thinks we are going to take her into Kara for DPS (+375 spell damage FTL) maybe she will get the hint when she doesn't get an invite week after week.

Boomkins are cool, they always looked fun, but I think I'd probably rather be a tank or healer, because sadly usually guilds have way too much dps...I may try one out just for pvp though. Don't really understand why the paladin would say that, but whatever, some people don't understand a lot of the game.

Boomkin in a heavy direct damage caster group(Mage, Elemental Shaman, Destruction Warlock, etc...) help bigtime while doing some decent damage themselves.

Here's the issue with 5 man heroics and Boomkin:
Zero CC, no ability to crossheal, worse dps than ele shammie...
1) Assuming there's at least SOME kind of CC in the group, there won't be a problem. If there are two or three mobs left to beat on the tank (who should be able to tank at least three mobs, let's be honest), Moonkins can Cyclone one at least long enough to kill one mob. It's done the trick for me, every single time.
2) Wrong. Just flat out wrong. I can't even imagine the number of times I've unshifted from Moonkin form to toss a quick regrowth, HoT the main tank, or take over healing completely if the healer dies.
3) I'm just gonna assume you don't know what you're talking about at this point. Either that or you've only ever partied with poor Moonkins. I am almost always #1 DPS in Heroics, even when constantly tossing HoTs around.
Just tryin' to purge the dusty old myths about Moonkins....

While I'm not sold on the aura being better than totem of wrath I don't really want to make that argument, I'm always in the group with the Elemental shaman so its not an issue.
As far as healing goes, I don't know what your gear level is like, but if a healer dies in a heroic or 10 man dungeon all I have to do is hit my idol and weapon swap button and I'm up to 1249 healing 131 mp5 while casting and 8615 mana (self buffed). This is more than enough to heal in a pinch.
Trinketed lifeblooms tick for 153, 305 and 457 and bloom for 1250ish, rejuv ticks for 570ish. This is in my dps gear with a healing idol and staff!
Don't let your raid leaders know how good you can heal though or they'll make you heal all the time :)

As a feral druid since the beginning with my previous main being a Mage, I guess I've always kind of just not been interested due to the number of spells available. I figure it's Starfire, Moonfire, Wrath for damage spells (not counting Hurricane, Insect Swarm, Entangling Roots or Thorns for various reasons -- I wouldn't really count Blizzard or Frost Nova as damage spells on my Mage). With my mage I have and use so many different spells that are suited to so many different situations. I guess I've always just felt that if I made my Druid into a Moonkin, I'd feel like there was too much repetition and not enough variety.
However, that's just my opinion and a statement on why I've never respecced Balance. My Mage loves being in a Moonkin group, and objectively I think they're pretty cool. I see probably just a few more Moonkins in my PUGs than I see Paladin tanks, I guess. A fair rarity on most counts but definitely useful if played well.

Haha! While a Mage does have more spells readily available (Since spellcaster is their one-and-only job), they typically don't cast more than two or three at any given time. In a raid, what does a Frost Mage do other than mash his Frostbolt hotkey? Moonkins are in the same boat, they just get a choice between Wrath and Starfire, depending on their Nature vs. Arcane spelldmg.
Sure, Mages have all their other little toys for those special occasions, but so do Druids. We don't get Counterspell, Slow Fall, Dampen/Amplify Magic, etc. But we do get Healing, Stealth, Minions (Treants), and more. We both have our fun spells, but when it comes right down to it, it's just mashing the same spell over and over.
Oh and in conclusion, Insect Swarm is one of our key moves. Any Moonkin with a lick of sense includes it in their general spell rotation. :D

Yeah, while I have to agree with you for boss fights, I find that (surprisingly
unlike
many Mages I speak to) during trash and in general non-boss play, I use a whole slew of my spells. Scorch, Fireball, Fire Blast, Blast Wave, Arcane Explosion, Frost Nova, Ice Lance, Dragon's Breath, Frostbolt (mostly Rank 1) -- to name a few. I really do, literally, use almost all of those with trash. Obviously the list changes situationally and depending on how much leisure I have between pulls. I'm not gonna spam AE and BW if I need to conserve mana :). So, I suppose I come from that when I say what I said about variety.
To that point, though, I think there are a whole
lot
of Mages that really do use one or two spells.

Yeah it's an awesome spell. I just wasn't including it in direct damage spells of reasonable utility (e.g. Hurricane is not generally of reasonable utility).
