I've seen some players put their healbot bars in groups of five BELOW their toon, but just above their hot keys. Assuming you've zoomed out enough you should be able to see your entire toon and have no big issue seeing both the bars and whether or not you're standing in fire. ;-)

Simple Answer: Don't use healbot.
I met a Holy Pally who uses healbot. It crashed one day in Naxx and then he promptly failed at healing, and if it weren't for the fact the other Pally knows how to heal we would've wiped. (I know this because he tried to do H HoS without it one day, most expensive wipe fest I've been in.)
He's become so dependant on Healbot that he's no longer a healer, he just pushes the buttons healbot tells him.
IMO, Healbot is a good idea, in theory. But theres a large difference in theory and actual implementation.
Anyone can push a button when told and call them self a healer.
But a good healer can heal by knowing whats happening around them and act accordingly.
"That mob hits rather hard, so prepare for some large damage bursts"
"Pulled an extra pat, tanks will be taking more damage."
"Mob enrages soon, get ready to blow CD's"
Does healbot take in account of these things?

It's pretty much just gaining raid healing experience.

As far as i have noticed this is something u just pick up. One day u will just notice that u arent dieing from aoe anymore, just be patient.
The thing with healbot is that you can get exactly the same function with the default UI and making many mouseover macroes but healbot is more customisable and looks nicer
does using all resources availible make you a bad player? no if anything it makes you a better player

I had the same problem as the OP, I used to stare exclusively at the raid frames and never watched the actual battle. I don't use healbot but I use a raid frame addon that replaces the blizzard unit frames like most.
What really changed this habit of mine was when I started doing BGs and pvping. Not only did I have to watch the health bars of those around me during battles, but I also had to watch myself because survivability is just as important and if you've ever played a healer in pvp, you know you're a high target.
I like to think it also increased my response time on top of increasing my awareness of the surroundings.
When I went back to raiding (though admittedly I love pvp much more now =p) I found I was much more able to balance watching the health bar and the actual battle, it worked for me!
