Boy oh boy if I were them I probably would've already had several debates over what this brings up as far as design morals go.
This site is so clean and minimalistic that I'd almost be inclined to just do something like Google Talk does and just recognize emoticons and bold/color them instead of rendering them as images.
In fact, I think I like that idea.
I hope Google wouldn't mind :).

I personally hate smileys, however google talk smileys sure is nice (the client version, not the gmail version).

Hey there,
As I said in another thread, we're working on getting the most important bugs and missing features out of the way. Smileys and similar features won't be decided until later on.

I would like to see them implemented with very simple yet clean smileys, just a small subset, nothing crazy.
Keep them simple like the current icons.

I would suggest some smileys like this:

Wouldn't fit in with a site like this AT ALL. I hope you don't integrate gfx emotes but just go with the bold tagged smilies mentioned earlier.

Like I said before, I think bolding is a good compromise falling heavily on the side of the anti-smiley people. Just make sure the dashed and un-dashed variants are recognized as well as the slash and backslash versions of slantyface :).

I personally love not having to see the graphical smilies, plus, trying to find out what a text smiley means can be fun.

Reminds me of deciphering vanity plates on long car trips as a child...
...come to think of it, car trips now, too ^_^.

I agree with this statement. If Emoticons ever do get added, please include a feature to not show them.

You know you could probably write a greasemonkey script to replace smiley text with images...
...wow, I need to go home.

Actually, I'd like to see the smilies like Google Talk uses.
It starts out like :), but it slowly rotates to the side and then you see the proper smile.
