I've heard it's a common way to hack these days. Your GM and healer are far from being the only ones to whom it happened. Beware of any in-game mail that tells you to go somewhere, it could be dangerous.

Sites that download malicious programs onto your computer that cause you to tell other people to go to the malicious site have been around for a while now.

Always confirm an email of that nature with the person who sent it Before investigating the link provided. Either ask the person who sent it about it in Guild chat, or send them a Tell asking about it if they're not in your guild. If its from some random person you've never heard of, ignore and delete ASAP. :P

Get a smarter GM.Hmm, you seem not to have understood. He had no way of knowing that our healer had been hacked and that it was really just a scammer who had sent that to him.
I dunno, when I get an email (or in game mail, whatever) from someone and it says to go to
www.ihackwowaccounts.com/spoofedaddress/downloadmeplease.exe;
I'm just not going to do that...

Well, when a normally trusted guild member sends you a link along the lines of:
I could see a lot of people being fooled. Most hosting websites don't have direct links to the file you have hosted, but rather you have to click through some sort of navigational page to confirm. Some people just don't put that much thought into checking the exact file name they're going to download. Not everyone on the internet knows what certain file extensions do what.
Long story short, quit acting like you're better than people. You were that guy who did it once before too and learned your lesson from it.
Edit - If a mod reads this, is there any way to make a "link" not a link?

I think that's enough self-righteous, "I'm smarter than the rest of the Internet" trolling up in here.

Indeed neura, very possible indeed - probably doesn't even need to be a "script" either.
Still, getting Firefox with Adblock and NoScript helps alot, along with frequent AdAware scans.
Or, you could do the bullet-proof one - do your internet-stuffs on another computer than you play on :)

Guys, if bank sends to you mail saying 'you got ..., click on this link', you shouldn't click.
Even if it's your bank and you are 100% sure the email is authentic you have to check, because you may be wrong.
Safest way to do so is to go to your own bank website (by manually typing it in), and same email they sent you should be there somewhere.
Same with anything else, especially 'game' things, heck you could have little brother sitting on the healer's account figuring it would be funny to point out the gullible and sending them viruses.
It's not about being 'smart', its about doing due diligence. The sad thing is GM will probably restore whatever was sold, and the GL will learn nothing. Try giving your bank info to a crook, and watch your money disappear forever. (no it didn't happen to me, but bank won't return your money because they have a snapshot of it).

Also get WOT along side of them, WOT is a addon that gives you the ratings on a website. For example this site got all top scores in, trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy and in child safety. So it gives these details for every site, on all links from a search engine, and from links inside a web based email.
