let me start off by saying that i am not very good at pvp. with some classes i am better with others. i tend to have much more survivability when i am playing with my death knight and i can rack up a high number of kills when i use the warlock. when i use my rogue, i have the added advantage of being stealthed, which makes up for skill that i am lacking. even so, i usually end up more lucky than good in battlegrounds. in one-on-one combat, i usually get killed, regardless of what class i am playing and what the other class is playing. i don't have the practice or the knowledge really of what to do.
my shaman ventured into battlegrounds for the first time at level 45. it was arathi basin. it was a nightmare. i literally got killed over and over before i could really even respond to anything. as an elemental shaman, i am not sure what spells or totems to use. not that it mattered much, because i was typically slaughtered and killed within seconds before i even had a chance to think of a defensive response.
so this is really two questions:
1. how in the world do you learn to pvp when you don't live long enough to really get any practice (this is any class).
2. how in the world do you pvp with an elemental shaman?

The problem with Ele shammys in pvp at low level is... you really have no survival skills.
I understand u dude i loved pvping with mi shamy at any low lvsl but for low lvls pvp ench is way better, and yea if you want to pvp as a ele i would start at 75 thats when you get lava burst and you can start owning.

1. how in the world do you learn to pvp when you don't live long enough to really get any practice (this is any class).
Although PvP requires quick reflexes and quick tactical thinking, most of the proper moves are known ahead of time. The best PvP players are very prepared: they plan out the best gear to get, the best combination of moves to use, the proper strategies to implement. When something happens then in PvP, they know exactly what to do and respond with quick muscle memory, a quick reflex, a quick twitch.
That being said, you've done a great thing by posting in the forums. It can be scary to post a question and be called a "noob", but asking questions is the way to get better. I have no specific advice to offer about Elemental Shamans, but I advise you to listen to what others have to say. Learn those combinations of moves, learn what does well, learn what gear to get, and go out and perform. And if you don't want to follow the norm, come up with your own strategy! Be creative. But plan a strategy ahead of time. When you only have a few seconds to live, you want to be doing something that you think will help.
Feeling confused and having to come up with a defensive response in a few seconds is tough. Once again, you've done great by posting here. Next time hopefully you can be better prepared and can feel more confident in what you need to do to win. =)

That's your problem. You need to get those defensive responses down to reaction. Think before the fight, then react when you're in it.
No thinking during the fight.
