Retribution Aura tooltip clarification

I need some help, please, in understanding exactly what Ret aura does for a raid.
The tooltip says
"Retribution Aura Rank x
Instant
Causes xxx Holy damage to any enemy that strikes a party or raid member within 40 yards.
Players may only have one Aura on them per Paladin at any one time."
Is this damage so insignificant that a pally would prefer to run Crusader Aura instead of Ret Aura when there is no ret pally in the raid?
It seems to me that this would add up especially on a fight like the crazy cat lady...if the tooltip is accurate.

It does what it says.
When anyone in range gets hit.. the aura bites the attacker on the butt.
Not a tremendous ammount of damage... but every little bit helps.

Honestly at first I thought that Ret talents like
Swift Retribution
and
Sanctified Retribution
needed to have Ret aura on to actually work. Reading the tool tips again I see this is not the case and it will work with
any
aura on.
As a paladin tank, if I don't have a Ret paladin in the raid i will use Ret aura when first pulling a boss if there is some kinda of threat lead issue. This is a VERY VERY rare case because the threat it produces is just as limited. It is there, but its small.
I'm sure however that any raid group would rather have something that does something small like Ret aura rather than Crusader aura which does nothing :-P
The swarmers during crazy cat lady is what I guess you are taking about right? Yes because there is so many mobs attacking at that point the damage would add up, but in the end, 2 seconds of a mage AOE would do more.
One place where I'm sure any tank would love to have it tho are whelp fights like Ony or Sarth. On multiple mobs our threat is spread pretty thin. Anything helps at that point.
I hope someone that knows ret better than I can maybe contribute more, but those are my 2 cents.
Cheers,
Hat

Crusader aura is never useful in raids, ever. It only applies to mounted speed.
If a resistance aura is needed, though, I usually prefer the ret paladin to put it up, since Concentration is so useful on aoe or tons of tiny add fights, and Dev is nice for giving tanks a bit of extra mitigation.

Lies! Dirty lies!
It certainly helped on timed ZA runs when mounting up and goin to the next boss.
haha!
a use in a raid for crusader aura!

Don't let those druids beat you to the herbs in Freya's room! Crusader FTW!

It also helps against Sarth, both for faster trash clearing and for moving to the right spot while the tank is positioning the boss.

Actually, sometimes you do need to run Ret Aura to get the damage/haste. There is a bug that is a Ret is not using Ret Aura while in a group with another Pally and then the Ret gets out of range of the other Pally, then the 3% damage/haste turns off. The only way to get it back is to turn on Ret aura again.

Also, originally the bonus only worked with Ret Aura only. One of the earlier wotlk patches made it so the 3 improved auras from the trees would work with any. Before that, you had to be using the correct aura.
