you want the technical answer?
your $14.99 dollar glasses may darken the light that comes into the eyes, however
good polarized lenses have several layers that completely emliminates glare
good lenses have UV protection
the only part of the light spectrum that damages your eyes are the deep end of blue and ultraviolet light, in other word, you're buying eye protection from the sun
if i were to put your question in context to skin, it will be like this
"why spend $21.99 a year for sunscreen? i'd rather let my skin do it for free."
you're aging your skin and increasing the chances for skin cancer ;)

I am taking a strong step towards protecting both my eyes AND my skin from the harmful rays of the sun by making sure I leave the house as little as possible.

You will die from obesity. =) Everyone needs sunlight, just 15 minutes in the sun causes your body to produce 2000% of it's daily dosage of Vitamin D. which is good! =)

mmm
no
the longer you stay in sunlight, the more your body builds resistance to light radiation
therefore, the less Vitamine D you produce
that means it is person dependant
besides
how dare you pick on our adorable bearorcat?
i mean, it's not like bears or cats have exposed skin to produce vitamine d in the first place ;)
