From my experience, a skilled (and well geared) shadow priest can top the damage charts, or come close.
Also, once you get to the 40s, leveling becomes a bit easier.

When you get higher lvl your spec matters more and more. I could heal as shadow priest up until Outlands, and then it started getting tougher. I could still do it, but it's tougher. Just find a heal spec and concentrate on dps. Until then it doesn't really matter.
Pre-TBC I healed as shadow 'till halfway though BWL, I got my 3 piece Trance bonus and decided that 30% regen was just too good to remain shadow.
Now though my priest is shadow again, I'm just under 1000 shadow damage (with my Darkmoon card full) and I frequently top the damage meters in kara. =D

Watch this space !
With 2.3 giving 1/3 of +healing to +damage, we'll soon have Holy Healing Priests topping the DPS table..!
(I joke, I joke!)

Interesting posts here... Most are a little off-base though.
A well geared (1200 shadow damage unbuffed) shadow priest is going to get beaten consistantly on most end-game (i.e. Black Temple / Hyjal) fights by Warlocks and Rogues.
Pre-Black Temple and Hyjal (through Kara, Gruul, Mag, and SSC) you'll see some good top 5 DPS. Gear is currently scaling other pure damage classes (not hybrids like Priest) in to higher DPS numbers.
You also have to consider that a SPriest brings a lot to the table aside from just DPS.
-Mana for casters
-A steady stream of healing for his group
-15% increased damage for most Warlocks (unless you use Immolate and Incinerate)
-5% increased Spell Damage for other casters
-Another Dispell
