Should i bother to get passive resistances for my pet, fire, arcane etc, or should i just get claw, dash, bite etc and then max out on Natural Armour and Stamina passives??

Hmm, well it is really up to you, but here are some of the things I have gleaned.
Armor: It may not be as beneficial as you would think because the 'armor' gained form the training may only increase you pets total armor by 5%, more or less depending on how much you spend and what level you pet is at that time (that bonus will actually decrease as your pet levels up) . Keep in mind that a pet derives it's armor from your armor rating, better gear on you = better armor rating on your pet.
Stamina: this means a lot to your pet in the long run, because, well it determins it's HP. HP does not distingush between physical attacks or magic attacks and is the sure fire way of keeping your pet in the game. Remember that you contribute a stam percentage to your pet as well, and stam behaves in the same way as armor was described above. Granted I have spent my extra TP on this one.
Resistances (Fire, Arcane etc.): There is a reason these are on there, armor only protects against physical attacks not magic. If you add some resistances to your pet it will take less heat from that fire mage you are surely to encounter. Consider what magic you are more likely encounter and train accordingly, and you can put a little in every catagory and dump more in the ones you feel are more important. I personally chose fire, shadow and arcane, it's your call.
Active abilities (bite, growl etc): These are your focus dumps, and you should choose the ones that benfit your playing style. You can go all out and learn the max level of these abilities or not. I opted out of max skills and spent the TP else where, but I prefure to dish out the damage over my pet anyway. The choice is yours.
Just remeber you only get 300 (@ 70) TP to spend, so choose wisely. Hope this clears up some things for you, good luck.

teach him higherst ranks of the abilities you are going to use: claw, dash... whatever you actualy use. be aware that growl dont require talent points and is most useful thing pet has.
cobra reflexes and avoidance are a must.
then go for some resistances - it is only way your pet will have any.
stamina and armor should be last, because your pet get some of your stamina/armor, and also by starting points in BM tree, so its quite cheap way to get it. Of those two, I say stamina is more important, because magical damage ignores armor.

This is incorrect.
You get 300 @ 60 and 375 @ 70
*EDIT* for spacing error
its 350 at 70....

If you get resistances never get higher then rank 3 of a resistance since pet resists work differently then player resitance and after rank 3 you get very hih diminishing returns of points to % resisted. I believe rank 3 is around 23% and max rank is 31%

Unless a friendly Druid has cast Mark Of the Wild on your pet - it's always worth asking for that and Thorns if you're grouped.
I can't remember off-hand if Blessing of the Wild includes pets.

I agree with having resistances based on what you do. If you PvP, think about CC issues. The first thing a caster or hunter is going to do to your pet is use CC on it and they aren't going to waste much more mana on it because they know if they kill you, the pet goes away, but not vice versa.
So, in PvP, nature, shadow and frost are a MUST if you want your pet actually doing something. Few people actually attack pet, so give them some stam to withstand DoTs. Dash is an absolute must, and give him a focus dump, like claw, otherwise, you're wasting focus and not putting out the damage necessary. Prowl is a big one if you have a cat too. I set mine up close to the flag, tell him to stay, an I hide somewhere.
In PvE, I sometimes, accidentally, pull mobs (dang murlocs!), so I need my pet to survive alot of melee. Def need some additional armor, stam and nature resistance for those annoying poisons. If you are a BM though, remember that your mend pet skill can have a % chance to get rid of those things with EACH TIC. I rarely have a round of mend that doesn't cure my pet, so don't don't over board on the nature resistance, the points are better spend elsewhere.
As someoen else said, you can always respec. I do this every now and then after I have gotten a few new things and I have a better sense of what my pet needs.
