Combat swords is the sensible spec to go for levelling. Take the above spec, following the combat tree until you complete it before heading over to assassination. What you end up with is a build which allows you to level extremely quickly and break into the raiding scene (should you wish to) with one of the best specs available at 70.
Subtlety builds and dagger builds may feel more flexible, but they're also less useful for levelling and are only going to serve to slow you down. That being said, I'll always recommend that someone specs for enjoyment before performance when it comes to solo play. If you're not having fun then you shouldn't be playing! Be mindful of your spec once you start running instances with friends or begin raiding though, as running with an obscure of inappropriate spec then can be seen as disrespectful to the efforts of your cohorts.
It's important to acquire a fast off-hand once you pick up combat potency (1.5 or faster) as doing so will translate to more potency procs.
Enjoy your time with WoW!

Thank you for the helpful info. especially about going combat till its done, then switching to assassination. Once I get swords spec, use two swords always? Or if I get a dagger that is better than something i'm using, go with that and one sword?
Also, I have been going by the DPS number, which is why my offhand is slow, but hits harder than what I was using. Should I go more for speed now, esp when i get deeper into the combat tree, and even if the dps is a little lower, by 1 or 2 dps but alot faster, should i stick with the faster weapon?
Again thank you for the info. Going to and respec to the posting above. I have been reading a bunch of posts here and on another site someone linked, and figure may as well give the swords a try. If nothing else I can respec later. haha
You're welcome.
Speed of your OH isn't a great deal until you get your first point in combat potency (although a faster OH will also mean more poison procs). Once you pick up combat potency it's advisable that you find a fast OH as soon as possible.
Once you take sword spec. it's a good idea to stick to swords, even if you find a different weapon with slightly higher DPS. Don't ever use a dagger in your MH as anything other than a pure dagger spec, and don't put fast weapons in your MH.

what will be a good speed for mainhand and offhand weapons? I'm guessing don't use a really fast mainhand because of the agro it can bring?
The reason you don't use a fast MH is that its lower damage range gimps your special attacks.
Once you hit 70, as a rule, try not to MH anything faster than 2.6 and OH anything slower than 1.5.

Ok, so i actually want a faster offhand than mainhand. How high on mainhand should I go if I want somehthing no faster than th 2.6. how high is too slow?
As before thank you for the help and advice. Hit 30 yesterday, and having alot of fun on the rogue.
There's no such thing as too slow when it comes to your MH. Although you won't find any 1h slower than 2.9 pre-60. At 70, the slowest you're going to get is 2.7 (with the exception of Warp Slicer from the Kael'thas fight or the MH Warglaive of Azzinoth).

You said you use ambush as an open sometimes. But that requires a dagger, and you are using two swords. Did you mean a different opener?
I'm guessing he levelled with daggers.
He's completely correct about slice and dice, you should be keeping it up during a fight (which will be easier now that you have 3/3 imp. slice and dice).

I had a macro that would swap out my dagger for a sword as soon as I completed the Ambush or cheap shot. That is why used it as an opener as I would have 2 sometimes 3 combo points depending on if I got the added combo point. This would give some significant time on the Slice and Dice. Macros have been very helpful for me as I leveled, it saved time trying to use all of the skills that a rogue will use. I always have a sword in combat, just a dagger with stealth.
If you want to take a look at macros wowwiki is a great place to see the most common macros for Rogues.
Do not use weapon swap macros or weapon swap builds. They are bad.

Just wanted to clarify why: It's because some time ago blizzard added a global cooldown from when you change weapons during combat.
Also because they're entirely unnecessary, the standard builds are more efficient and don't require you to swap between weapons.
