First of all, welcome! :)
1 - A tank is someone who keeps threat on enemies, and is basically the meat shield who keeps the whole group alive by taking the threat-based damage.
This
will explain it much better.
Warriors, Druids, Paladins and Death Knights are tanking classes.
2 - Report Spam and click the Ignore button. Unfortunately, they are everywhere.
3 - Umm, I'm not too sure about Mages, but you may want to look at
the mage board
and read the
stickies
and
FAQ.
4 - I am not sure, but while leveling, try fighting Yellow mobs for a relatively easy XP per kill/time taken to kill ratio. ;)
5 - I have never used RAF, so I'll leave that to someone else.

- A tank is a name people call heavily-armored players that are made for mitigating the majority of damage in a group. (prot warriors, prot pallies, feral druids to an extent, and frost DKs)
- Yes, download an addon called ShutUp. It will block whispers from anyone not in your guild or on your friends list. Other than that, you will still see them in Trade.
- I don't know much about mages. Check out
www.wowpopular.com
for the basic specs for all classes.

This
should explain #4
- You email one of your friends and have them buy two months of wow and then untill lvl 60 on any character on both accounts you have triple exp
Plus the recruited account can grant the recruiters account levels untill he is at the same level as him
and the Recruiter gets a free Swift Epic Zhevra mount

I play on my friend's account a bit, and want to keep playing, but I need some questions answered. Official wow forums are full of stupid and fail, so I figured I'd ask here.
#1: what is a tank? Is it a siege engine, like demolisher...? Why do people want tanks for groups?
#2: Is there any way to ignore the gold spammers besides reporting for spam?
#3: what is a good leveling spec for mages? Right now I'm planning on
this
by the time I'm 30. ATM only level 20 btw.
#4: how does the exp scale work? I think I get less exp than normal for greens and more than normal for oranges, depending on our level difference, but what is it? 80% - 100% - 120% for green - yellow - orange, maybe?
#5: how does recruit a friend work? I was planning on getting my own account so me and friend can level quicker, but how exactly does it work? I heard you have to be in a group, or within a certain distance or level of your friend to get the benefit, can someone sort the crap from the truth for me?
1. A tank is a player who in instances make enemies attack them and do various attacks on enemies to keep "threat" to make the mobs attack them while the DPS damage them until they die and the healer heals whoever would need a heal. Only Druids, Death Knights, Warriors and Paladins are able to tank.
2. Yes, right click their name and "ignore". There are also addons who auto-blocks all characters below level20.
3. Sorry, cant answer that question as a DK :S
4. Once again, no idea :P
5. First, if you're going to be RaF'd you'll have to make a trial account from the link in the RaF mail your friend will send you. During these 10 days you will recieve more XP than usual but not quite 3 times as much. Then when its set and ready, you guys will get triple XP from everything. I believe you gain extra quest XP no matter distance but you'll have to be within 15 (?) yards of eachother to gain triple XP from killing enemies.
Some basic info:
Instances = 5 man places where you go to get gear/XP/w/e or raids, 10/25 man, raids are for level 60, 70 and 80.
For a 5 man instance you'll need:
1 Tank (Feral Druid, Frost/Blood at higher levels Death Knight, Protection Warrior or Protection paladin)
3 DPS - There are two kinds of DPS, ranged and melee. Melee DPSers are Blood/Unholy Death Knights, Fury and Arms Warriors, Retribution paladins, feral DPS druids and rogues. Ranged DPSers are Mages, Hunters, Warlocks, Balance specced druids, Elemental shamans.
1 Healer (Holy Paladin, Holy Priest, Restoration Druid and Restoration Shaman)
Raid:
You won't really have to worry about raids that much since you will probably dont raid until you hit 80 at all, but if you're gonna PuG a raid in 80 you might wanna know some stuff to dont make a fool out of yourself :]
For a 10 man raid you usually need:
2 tanks, one Maintank and one Offtank
3 Healers One healer for Maintank (MT), one for Offtank (OT) and one for healing the DPS.
5 DPS Preferable a mixture of ranged and melee, too many melee = Fail.
For a 25 man raid you usually need:
2-3 Tanks, depending on which raid really.
5-6 Healers
16-18 DPS
Hope this can help you :] Good luck and have fun out in Azeroth! Now go kill some kobolds ;)
If you're playing at an EU server, you can always find the helpful Horde Death Knight Adaro messing around at Talnivarr :)

whoa, thank you all for the rush of answers!
I'm gonna be busy reading up on tanks and threat (aggro?), RAF, mage stickies... man, there's a lot to know about WoW.
Thanks for the welcome :)
Honestly, I would just work your way up, run a few instances as you level, you'll pick it up as you go. Don't treat WoW as a studying game, though I admire that you want to improve early on :)
Most fights in 10 mans you use 2 heals.... one for tanks and the other for raids
And that is just completely false. OPTIMALLY you use 2 heals, but definately not most.

There's some really good answers here already! But I wanted to help you out with what wasn't answered too well..
#3) Mage Spec
Okay before I give you my answer/talent spec, I want to say this... Talent specs when leveling (this sortah changes when you hit 80) are based on how you want to play.
I prefer frost, and I play pretty straight forward (pulling one mob at a time), and I try to conserve as much mana as possible to extend downtime.
So this is my
leveling
spec.
And it may be confusing JUST looking at the spec itself, so I took the time to write out each talent individually and when I would put it in. Since you are just beginning I think this will really help you out.

Feel free to copy that to a notepad or refer back here for that while you are leveling!
Another way Frost Mage's like to level is with an AOE Spec (pulling multiple 3-5+ mobs at the same time, and killing them all together). This is a lot more fun, but it's fairly difficult to get the hang off. You wont be able to do it in every situation, and specing for this style makes you weaker in normal situation, which is why I opt to avoid the spec now.
Another thing I think it's important to point out is what you should look for while your leveling when it comes to gear. You will want gear that gives you mainly +Intellect, and +Spell Power. You can decide what you want beyond that between spirit and stamina. (Stamina will give you more health, spirit will increase your regen rate).
With the talent spec I gave you, most of the time mobs will never even get to you. Even if they do, you have so many defensive spells that it wont deal much damage. So the main thing you need to worry about is stacking intellect so you can cast more spells before you ahve to sit down to drink!
Welcome to WoW though! Make sure you follow the most important rule... HAVE FUN!

I would edit this to not say "frost DKs" because all DK specs are (Supposedly, Unholy isn't that great at the moment), and blood is just as good as frost. Just don't want this guy to turn into a "LAWL SPEC FROST NOOB!" kind of guy. Also, Feral Druids to an extent? Druids are currently the second best (Paladins First) tanks in the game.
