Well unlike some people I don't have much of a fascination with Economics(/point up). What I've come up with is:
X = the amount of primal mana's you can farm in one hour.
Y = the amount of primal airs you can farm in one hour.
Now lets take the average of your AH prices and say that
Primal mana's cost 16g and Primal Airs cost 22g.
What we need to know is how many primal manas do we need to farm in order for it to be more efficient than primal air. For simplicties sake lets just come up with an equation where they will be equal.
16x = 22y
Simplified
x = 1.37y
Let's say that you can farm 6 primal airs in one hour. So...
x = 1.37(6) = 8.22
This tells us that you need to be able to farm 8.22 primal manas in one hour in order to get the same value from farming 6 primal airs in an hour.
I really don't know how long it takes you to farm so this is something you will have to figure out for yourself. If anyone sees some problems with my math feel free to correct me.
Ok, except for the part of mana/water is not correct the rest I totally agree on, in this instance you are correct. See what gives you the best gold/per hour, and do that. And try to see how big the difference of doing something more fun but maybe less g/ph in grinding, there are differences and at the end it is a game :)

It does not matter, because you are proving a point and not only this specific case.
