Hello,
First post, I have been lurking for a while but though it was time to really get serious. Dabbled in fury for a while but after getting flamed for Fury tanking in instances went and got re-spec'd to prot. I am around lvl 44 and have ran SM too many times to count.
So I have been using the random dungeon finder, I find it usually sticks me in instances out of my comfort zone, and ones where I haven't been yet. So the problem is I don't know where to go and usually miss out on a boss or two, is this a practice makes perfect kind of scenario any help would be appreciated here?
As far as actual tanking basics I usually run in there to old fashioned way, (no charge/intercept and I don't stance dance - should I be?) rock a thunderclap and cleave shield bash and revenge whenever I can and demoralize shout the mobs. Usually works fine and I keep most the threat on me with a command shout here and there when i lose control. Is there any pointers you can get me in regards to actual tanking basics.
Thanks!
Mega
Here is a link to my guy if anyone want to look and see what I am doing right /wrong as far as gear and such. I have a Heaven's Light mace and aegis of the scarlet commander while tanking.

Read up on dungeons in your level range on this website so you know what to expect in advance.
Never stop cleaving.
Cleave your way to victory.

In Cleave I trust then.
Also I haven't been doing many battlegrounds or PVP stuff, is it something I should turn my focus towards, seems a lot of good gear can be had by accumilating honor points and buying it, but it is worth the payoff compared to questing/doing dungeons?

practice makes perfect - kudos to starting early.
don't waste a GCD on demo shout at that level, and don't use shield
bash
either unless you're trying to interrupt a caster.
shield
slam
when you learn it, spam TC, sunder, and cleave. be careful you don't rage starve yourself with too many cleaves.
BG's are definitely an alternate way to level, so queue up if you enjoy them. but i would highly recommend you continue tanking and
definitely
do the ones out of your "comfort range". just ask for directions if you get lost :)
uh, you're profile has you with a whirlwind axe... you should have the SM shield by now and a 1h for tanking. you should have shield spec maxed for leveling, as well as puncture & focused rage, so fill those in. you could easily spare the points in dodge for now.
