You read the post wrong. Later in the thread the same guy elaborates further and finds an optimal formula of c=m+25, before factoring in pet damage (which is a very significant boost to crit). This makes the difference end up at c=m+30 or 35, based on other theorycraft I've seen in various places.
Once again, the negative base crit and +8% positive mastery bonus we intrinsically have dictates that we should never value Mastery > Crit with current stat budgets and rating conversions, as this threshold seems unattainable.
Yes there is an optimal balance and there is a point where Mastery > Crit because each point of Crit makes mastery worth more (and vice-versa). It just doesn't seem attainable currently, even if one stacks and reforges to crit. Maybe sometime in the future.
It's not a fixed number. the +x part of the equation depends on the ratio of physical damage to elemental damage. While the post I linked mentions that he doesn't include the pet, that's easy to include - just count pet dps when determining the ratio. Based on my logs, it's about 40% physical to 60% elemental atm, so I want c%=1.666*m%
6
I currently (ilevel 347) have 21.8% crit and 15% mastery. So that's a bit too much mastery (ideal would be to have 24%crit @ 15% mastery). But that's after reforging a bunch of excess hit and haste into mastery. If I'd reforged it into crit, I'd have too much crit, not enough mastery. This is close enough, IMHO - I'm not chasing exact results, just close. Chances are, the next few reforges I'll put into crit.
But we certainly have high enough point budgets to allocate properly between mastery and crit. If I have enough at 347, folks in 359 raid gear definitely do.

No, that post is based on a fixed number. If it wasn't it would have come to the conclusion c = 1.25m rather than c = m+25.
This post can elaborate
And
Corwyn's comment here
is more of a realistic methodology, but still checks with the original c = m+25 math.
It's not a fixed number, but you are correct, I was applying the formula wrong. The post you linked computes based on 80% elemental 20% physical. The number will change for every ratio of physical to elemental, which will vary depending on your gear, your rotation, the fight, etc.
Same with Corwyn's comment you linked - the 33% he gives is when "he magical percentage of all damage is 75%". It's not a fixed number.
But you are right, I was reading c%=m%+x as c%= m%*(1+x), where x=phys%/ele%.
So I was overvaluing mastery significantly. Will have to reforge some and see what happens, thanks.
