If you're planning to be a vending machine, a taxi, or PvP, go with a mage.
If you're planning on looking f*cking awesome on a horse of firey awesomeness and pull melt-my-face DPS while listening to dragonforce and eating popcorn, roll warlock.

Raids and PvE? Go lock. Destro is top dps at end game ATM, I still think Destro is just for fire mages who roll lock and do not want to spec out side of there comfort zone.
Aff is fun for me. It is the only spec that can make full use of the doom guard. + lvling as Aff is so easy. Where as mages have to drink to regen mana every 3 mins
PvP? it is a toss up. Arcane and Destro are close in play style. Burst all the way! Arcane uses more escapes and Destro uses more cc. Frost is harder to play well. Demo and Fire are not that good for arena play but can work in BGs. It is my opinion that locks have it worst in PvP atm
And yes, as modibybob said, if you roll a mage you will be expected to give every one food and water. And be whispered to by everyones alt on your server asking to give them a port to Dalaran.
Just a FYI you posted this on a lock fourm. you will be told to pick a lock. /lol

I had this same question months ago. After 3 months.. I never look back thinking: "Why didnt i take a mage". A friend did, he regrets. Tbh... Locks just rule, if u learn the rotations etc u can survive anything and the best part, u dont get tired of it like u do with a dk :)
Also, one thing i do love. Mages got portals, u got that handsome ritual which u can summon instance members etc. It just rocks.. Cant count how many times ive heared in party chat: "Locks <3"
But like the others have said. Check ur playstyle. And how interested are u in the loreplaying etc.
If u decide to roll a lock, start with affliction spec untill u reach 60. Then flip to FG. I know u wont regret it :)
Best of luck =)

I don't know why everyone doesn't like pvp as a warlock? I think it's ace.

The warlock DPS ceiling is considerably higher than a mages, but its much harder to achieve. Mages are very much a pew pew blow your CD's when they come up class, whereas warlocks require much more... finesse. Is that a horrible generalisation? Of course it is, but its true.
As to which is more enjoyable, depends on your personality. If you like a "pure" class, without the complex evil lore behind it, roll a mage. If you like the idea of a down and dirty fella thats more than happy to kill a few babies to get his own way, roll a warlock.
On the pvp side of things its a toss up imho. Right now Warlocks are at the lowest ebb they've seen since early vanilla - we're not unviable, but we are scraping the bottom of the barrell. Its hard to say "roll a lock" if you want to pvp and win. Of course, even if we're no longer PVP gods, chain fearing some poor bastard to death is still VERY satisfying.
