So i been farming saronite bars for about a week now, throwing them on the AH. Today i finally noticed that the freakin deposit is 15g. At that rate i can make the same amount of $ (or more) as if i had just been selling them strait to the vendor.
So wtf causes this? Is it just some arbitrary number blizz picks to be the deposit or is it actually based on supply? Like if there is abundance of an item does the deposit go up to try to force a limit on the supply?
Besides. Guild Talents will reduce this IIRC.

On EU Darkspear, Saronite Ore, full stacks, is going for 9g - 11g. The AH is littered, and I mean littered with the rubbish.
20 Saronite Ore makes 10 Saronite Bars. 10 Saronite Bars Vendors for...hrrrmm...12.5g. Anyone see the stupidity at work here?

Why would anyone auction saronite bars? Auction the ore instead.

Depends on your server, like said above, sometimes the bars are worth more, and engineers who dont mine, will buy them.

It just hovers at the threshold, 27g bar stack buyout, 13g ore stack buyout. Considering that the AH makes a nasty cut, these people are actually losing money. Tons of people just don't pay attention.
But ontrack, I think it's crazy that the deposit price on saronite is 15g a stack and zero on Runed Orb.
I personally think that Blizzard has far too many mining nodes in Icecrown.

Bars on my server average 40g a stack. The deposit is 15. That means i only make 25g a stack, if they sell.... :(
It doesn't work like that. If the auction sells, you get the deposit back. You would get 53g from a successful auction; 15 + (40 - 5%).
*edit* Might be slightly inaccurate, as I don't know if the AH takes a cut of the deposit as well, or just the sale price. Either way, we're talking a 75s difference so numbers should be close enough. ;)

End game players will often drop any gathering profession what so ever so as to get access to more stat increases.
Gathering professions (except lolherbalism) have stat increases too. My point is that the demand for ore is higher than for bars, primarily because of jewelcrafting. In most cases that will mean the equivalent price for ore will be higher than for bars; also, the trade will be livelier which means a lower risk of not selling. When an auction does not sell, the deposit is forfeited.
Oh, and I believe the vendor price and thus deposit is also lower for an equivalent amount of ore compared to bars.

Not enough increases if you're min/maxing.
I tend to disagree. Mining, for example, provides 60 stamina. Blacksmithing provides two sockets, which with epic gems corresponds to 60 stamina. Leatherworking provides fur linings to replace bracer enchants; the stamina one upgrades from the 40 stamina enchant to 102 stamina, a net gain of 62 stamina. Enchanting allows you to enchant your two rings; stamina enchants on rings totals 60 stamina. Jewelcrafting allows you to socket three Dragon's Eye gems; a stamina gem provides 51 stamina, for a net gain of 21 * 3 = 63 stamina for three of them instead of regular epic stamina gems.
Beginning to see a pattern, aren't we. At most, you're looking at a 3 stamina difference. Min/maxing for 3 stamina seems fairly extreme to me.
