We agree to disagree.
Some find non-standard/foreign characters a nuisance, I don't. But the advice to get a different name if mine is taken... no.
Why should I be forced to forfeit my favorite name, the one I've been using for a long while, the one identifying me as
me
, and use a different name? Or should I use a stitched together thing like FlyingMilkmanOfDoom? I'd rather not, as I'm quite fond of actual names, not words glued together.
It's sad, that in games like WoW you can't have two people with the same name in the same room(server).

These arguments is only valid on NA realms I suppose. On EU realms it is valid to use characters from your language in names. And if you don't want right-click or /who the name to invite the guy, then that is your decision. I have tried to avoid using any non a-z characters in names because people usually have trouble with them. Using them is especially stupid when you copy another person's name. If my name is Sentri and someone finds it being already in use, why would he want to use Séntri or any other name like that? He could be mistaken as my alt or something like that. *Cursing for the zillion Légölás-ish named hunters* If you really like that name if it is your long time used nickname then feel free to do so but accept the fact that I won't be really happy when I see you.
Btw, it takes one key press for me to make an ä. I have it on my keyboard. But it's still stupid to use it because many people don't. Besides, if your name is Legolas, then fine, I accept it. If your name is Legöläs for the fact that those are different letters in my language I tend to pronounce the name in my head differently that the normal english. It just sounds funny making a wierd first impression of you.

Apart from the pain-in-the-arse of having to find the codes to make these 'special' characters (whisper me if you want an invite), these 'special' characters are often not pronounced quite the way you'd want them to be. For example, 'Đitzy' isn't Ditzy, it's typically pronounced as 'Thitzy', with a bit of a zing in the 'th', as you would pronounce 'the'.
This is exactly what I tried to say. :) I agree.
Also, slightly off topic, same goes with the variations of "death", "lich king", "arthas" etc in death knight names...
"Dëätharthasx has joined the raid group." Sigh...

how is However, it would be kind of awesome if you didn't use special characters. They're annoying. Particularly when trying to form groups but being unable to invite said person without awkward workarounds.
how is it a special character? its a real letter, just because it may not be used in yer country doesn't mean its not a real character.
It's a special character because it's not an ASCII character†; this causes an uncountable number of headaches in regards to encoding and availability of the key on the keyboard. These issues normally don't happen with ASCII characters as their encoding is always the same and they are found on virtually all keyboards.
So if you wanna be accessible I wouldn't use any non-ASCII (or "special") character. :>
†Note: many ASCII tables you find on the internet contain 256 characters; ASCII however has
only
128 characters and what you're probably seeing is called ISO-8859-1.

As an experiment, I tried to come up with some version of Sephiroth that hadn't been used on one of those high population realms. No dice.

I've tried some ways but most of them don't work. When I copy and paste the "ä", the system automatically change it into "a". Hence I have to change the language setting of the system to German and input my little "ä".
I think it's okay to use a German phrase as my character's name and mostly it doesn't cause troubles unless someone doesn't know me and wants to whisper.

Getting
an extended keyboard layout
might help with these problems.
Personally I try to avoid using 'special' characters in the names I use – unless I specifically want to avoid being randomly contacted – but I really have no problem with the people who do. Using a layout similar to the linked one (in my case based on Finnish) I can input at least the following without alt codes or copypasting:
