depending on your spec.. theres multiple AoE heals you can use.. for instance, Prayer of Healing or Divine Hymn if you're disc, or circle of healing, those two, and chakra healing. If you wnt even more AoE healing, pick up the PoH glyph, and you get an initial heal along with a HoT on everyone that it healed. if you're disc, use Power word:barrier for damage mitigation, holy, tell dps to L2 use Lightwells. and finally, DO NOT TOP people off, you'll go oom if you do that.. there arent too many mechanics that'll cause raid wise spike damage.

Actually, I Heal as Holy, I guess it's much better than Discipline in facts of ''Keeping the TANK's HP at 100% and AOE Healing''
When the fight starts i cast a PW:S , a PoM and a Renew , then i cast Chakra: Heal and keeps casting heal on tank to refresh the duration of Renew , and when he is on 60 - 70% i cast a heal + HW:S.
When the HP of a dps start dropping i cast a renew and a HW:S , or maybe a Heal , if all the DPSers are taking damage i cast Prayer of Healing (with glyph , that heals for 1k , 2k Overtime, and the Echo of Light proc , it is very good for AoE Heals , since when you cast a PoH it will heal 1k) , Circle of Healing and PoM .
But if a DPSer is at 50 - 40% i'll cast a Greater Heal + HW:S , since i have 2,5 combat Regen , + Trinket Proc (Procs Everytime) it go to 5k combat regen , so casting Greater Heal or Prayer of Healing isn't a Problem to my mana.
A talent that helps your Mana Regen on Holy Tree is
Holy Concentration
, It is Very Useful if you have a big amount of Spirit, and this makes you don't worry about you mana, since you have Shadowfiend + Hymn of Hope.
As SeptimusIV mentioned above, if you don't have a good group, that don't knows how to CC , goodbye to you, they will all blame you ( the healer) , and if the group is a guild group , they will kick you, yeah, the healer's life isn't easy...

I can't for the life of me understand why Blizzzard &*!@ed up our mana so bad
this is the wrong attitude for healers to have.
i can tell you that if the group understands the fight's mechanics and executes it well then i can heal any heroic encounter with relative ease.
if i can and you can't then it's not blizzard that messed up, it's you.

Or, the people you're running with.
It definitely helps to bring people you know along with you to heroics. If everyone's prepared (geared, gemmed, enchanted, well fed, etc.) and know the fight mechanics, it goes a long way to contribute to the group's success. No longer are DPS allowed to just ignore fight mechanics and expect the healer to save their butts.
Running heroic Grim Batol last night and a couple of us were new to the Drahga/Valiona fight. After seeing her new abilities, it was surmised that the easiest way to avoid her breathe effect is to just stay within around 10 yards of her. Once she turns around and starts casting, you'll have
just
enough time to run out of the way of her breath.
This is just an example of how coming up with a plan can prevent a ton of damage, and thus save a crapload of your mana if executed properly. Heroics are hard, yes, but every upgrade that people get over the next couple months is going to make them a lot easier. After the first raiding tier is through, we'll probably be able to ROFLSTOMP heroics again.
On the contrary to my previous example, the final boss in heroic Grim Batol was actually quite easy. His abilities are predictable and most damage is avoidable. The part where we messed up was when he was at about 5% after a Shadow Gale and we decided to ignore the adds and just burn him. Trouble was, we were all still stacked on each other from the Gale and we got hit by the AOE stun, healing the boss up to about 20% and the adds were attacking the eggs. Game over. We decided we should just stick to the fight mechanics and not get distracted by the boss's HP. The next attempt was successful.

Priests got 2 freedoms: you can pick your chakra every 30 seconds and you can switch at will between Inner Focus and Inner Will.
Do not ever cast Holy Word: Sanctuary.

Prayer of healing, takes about 30% of my mana
You run Heroics in no gear? That could be a problem
Prayer of Healing
26% of base mana.
Edit: Aaaaaaaand wrong link

Reconsider the use of CoH. Compare it to PoH. For now CoH is a rather mana expensive but mediocre heal.

I had a hard time with mana when I first started because I still had the Wrath mentality of Flash Spam, Flash Spam, Flash Spam...
When I started practicing with the new mechanics, healing is now a skill, instead of a faceroll.
I always start pulls like this:
Drop Lightwell
PoM the tank
Chakra
*tank pulls*
Renew the tank
Fade
Heal
HW: Serenity
Heal, Heal, Heal
Renew PoM
HW:Serenity
Then just use CoH, PoH with Serendipity procs and Binding Heals when necessary.
Also, make sure that during boss fights when your mana is about 40-50%, you cast Shadowfiend, then Hymn of Hope immediately after and keep channeling it for as long as you can. This will restore most of your mana and your all set. Also, grab Mythical Mana Pots and pick up the Corrupted Egg Shell from regular GB, and set it to be used everytime you cast heal. This will help with mana consumption.
We all just have to re-learn how to heal. I thoroughly enjoy it now.
