Yea yea I know, these threads have been seen a thousand times before. But I'm still going to write one because I'm actually requesting help with getting to know how this happened. Share your stories etc if it happened to you, because I'm completely dumbfounded.
I have been playing WoW since the middle of 2007. So about 2½ years. I'm a fan of fair play and never had any kind of trouble in the game, I dare to say I have never even answered a goldsellers whisper.
So, I just "returned" from a break from WoW, which lasted about 3 months. My subscription ran out and I didn't renew it - until 2 days ago.
I changed my regular WoW account to a battle.net account, added my 60-day gamecard, updated WoW, updated my addons, created a level 1 shaman and played for maybe 2 hours. Then I logged out and didn't get to the computer until next day evening.
When I tried to log in it told me wrong username/password. At this point I already had a bad feeling of what was going on, although I have never been hacked in any game before (I've played MMOs for maybe 7 years) I read enough forums etc to know the stories very well of how it goes when people get hacked.
I logged into my mail, just to notice there were 3 new mails. One of these regular fake e-mails that tries to steal you account information for WoW, which I immidiately deleted, and two e-mails from Blizzard... which were valid. The first one had arrived at 4am stating that my password had been changed. The second one had arrived yesterday, stating that my account has been permanently banned for "Involvement in online trading activities". So that was it, at least I could be sure of what had happened. I also went to the armory and checked my level 60-80 characters, all of them were missing some gear (Not all though for some reason.
First thing I did was changed my e-mail password from a different computer since I was afraid I had got keylogged.
After that I ran full scans with AVG Anti Virus, Spybot Search&Destroy, and with Malwarebytes Anti Malware. With the result that all of the scans resulted in ZERO infections. I also did a Hijackthis scan, I'm not experienced with the program but I still couldn't find anything suspicious in the log file. I posted it on safernetworking.org forums but havn't got any replies. Still, I feel quite sure I haven't got any infections.
Next thing I did was write to Blizzard about the issue, I got mail same evening stating that they had received it so now I'm waiting for the reply.
So... now to the reason I'm writing this apart from that I had to vent a bit. How the heck has someone got my account details?
Let me make this clear - I have never, ever got hacked in any game I've played (Loooong list). I got AVG Anti Virus + ZoneAlarm firewall up to date, AVG does scheduled scans, and I scan with Spybot S&D and Mawarebytes around once a week. I keep everything up to date.
I'm running on a valid and always up to date Windows Vista. My browser is Firefox with no-script addon. I never click on any advertisements, visit any dodgy sites (I'd call myself paranoid in this case, I never dare to click on a link on official WoW forums unless it's imageshack or youtube), I have never touched a fake e-mail claiming to be from Blizzard. My password to wow should not be too easy to crack. I have never shared my account info with someone, not even in real-life (none of my friends are into WoW).
I'm kind of forced to buy an authenticator if I get my account back, otherwise I will never feel secure again. I don't care about lost items etc, I was going to do a fresh start anyway, all I would like to know is how this happened.

Perhaps you are playing a laptop? If your wireless connection is not encrypted (WPA2), then a packet sniffer could have snatched your account details. My guess is that someone is hanging out on your connection and running a packet sniffer. Just a guess.

I do not have a wireless connection so that theory is not possible, I appreciate the guess though.
I have never played WoW from a different computer than my own. The password thing though... I got 3 or 4 passwords that I use, meaning that I do have my password for WoW in use at a few other places aswell, so that's the only possibility at the moment. If that's the case I will propably never figure out where it was "leaked".
