Gearscore is more or less useless nowadays; the basic players are up there with the 'elites' so who cares what the GS is; I saw someone last night post their GS for running Magister's Terrace, when I asked them why they told me that they thought it would get them into a group.... for a level 70 instance......
It's a tool for the elitist to use to lord over other people; the only thing good thing GS can provide is making sure the tank is up for whatever they are about to run; beyond that... who cares? As long as the tank and heals stays alive and the boss drops, who cares if the 4k dps in blues and lesser epics isn't over 5k GS.....

i've never had an issue with gearscore, and am for it.
i don't rely on it, i don't judge people by their gear, but i will admit that i have strived in the past to increase my gearscore for my epeen.
i very rarely pug raids, so gearscores haven't been much of an issue with my guild. the core of the guild try to keep current on gear, and we're all decent players and know a thing or 2 about our classes. my guild has never been about "whoevers best geared gets to raid tonight." we're much more about getting a group together who know each other, can get along with each other. . especialy when things get stressful and frustrating. . .and who can get the job done.
i will also admit though that when i see someone with a really high gearscore, i stand in a bit of awe.
gear has always been an important part of this game to me. . .i've gone to great lengths (farming for a couple weeks so i could pay 8500g on a shield. . .only to have it replaced within a week! xP lol) to get some of the gear i've had.
and i'm proud of the gear i get. . .even when it's easy to get. i still get a sense of progression and satisfaction from receiving new upgrades to my gear.
so i'm proud of my gear, and i think it's awesome when i see someone in awesome hard to get gear.
i don't automatically assume they're amazing players (have been grouped with a couple very well geared players, who knew nothing about what they were doing), but i do think their gear is awesome.
so i don't really use gearscore to judge how good a player is. . .but i do like having it as it gives me some sort of rating to give my overall gear. . .which i quite enjoy.

Gearscore is simply a tool, and in my opinion, should only be treated as such, not as a replacement for skill appraisal.
Captcha was j1227... GS isn't as elitist as people say?

I've never actually used GS, but as far as I know it only checks the level of your gear, right? Does it check to see if you're gemmed/enchanted properly? Does it even check to see if the gear you have is appropriate for your class/spec? Does it know the difference between PvE/PvP gear? Does it tell you if someone is hit/defense/etc. capped?
My issue with it (theoretically) is that it doesn't check the
quality
of the gear (or the brains of the player behind it) but simply the level. In the age of 20 minute random heroics, there's absolutely no challenge involved in getting high level gear. It's simply a matter of putting in the time and maybe a bit of luck. It's a bit disheartening how many people I run into with very nice gear that seem completely clueless as to how the game actually works. I always have to wonder, are they really that bad, or do they just not care?
I think it's kind of funny that GS is only around now that epics are easy to get. It seems like so many people that use it are people that haven't been around that long, or didn't have the chance to raid in the past - and now they're desperately grasping at straws, searching for that sense of elitism that epics used to carry.
Obviously there are places where GS might be useful - a player in fresh 80 gear doesn't have much chance of killing Arthas for example. But really, I don't need an addon to tell me that. I can glance at a player strolling through Dalaran and get a pretty decent handle on their relative gear level.

GS is really on usable for pugs. It's pointless for anything else, except to keep track of your own and possibly guild members to make sure there aren't any vast differences.
Imo, to find out as much as possible about a pug with nothing but a scroll over, GearScore + ElitestGroup = A reasonable full analysis on their gear and raid history.
Problem solved.

Personally I like achievements... it says "I have done this before... so it isn't news to me" While it isn't super precise... if used honestly as a bare minimum it says the player has at least seen what is supposed to be done. That's actually why I like the mod altoholic, lets you see all of your toons achievements so if someone asks you, you can link them the achieve, you just have to be upfront about which character you got it on.
