Focused Attacks - What have I missed?

I am a 41/5 /25 spec Rouge and I see that some Rouges spend 3 talent points on Focused Attacks, the outcome of this is that you get Two (2) Energy? I have 130 Energy and most attacks cost 30-50 points....
What have I missed ? Focused Attacks seems like a bad investment....
How does it work and what is the benefit, is it just a big waste of talent points or am I just stupid?
Dodda, lvl 80 Troll Rouge.

Hmm very interesting, thanks for your answers!
I still believe it is very expensive to pay 3 talent point to get 2 energy..... even if you crit a lot...
Have anyone with a decent gear mesured how much energy you get in a 10-14 sec fight..... usually you are dead if you dont wasted your opponent within this time...
I have 620 in rescilliance and about 19 800 Hitpoints...
I am not a experinenced rogue player have played at lvl 80 for a month or so.... But I really enjoy playing rouge and believe it or not , I often end up in the top of Battle grounds...
Now that I am getting a little warmed up as a rogue im am trying to optimize my damage output and I really appreciate your thoughts and ideas . Thanks!
I am sorry for missspelling Rogue, I am really #$%^ty on spelling :)

It is definitely worth it in pvp. It gets better the longer the fight lasts. More energy = more damage.

Thanks for your very informative answers!
I totally agree that for PVE Focused Attacks will be worth the points spent. I have a 51/13/7 Spec for PVE, and it have Focused attacks incorporated.
For the PVP part I use the 41/5/25 spec and I must say that I agree with Abzoloot, you dont stand face to face as a Rogue with a DK or Pally and trade blows so the engery gain from Focuesed Attacks would probably be very limited in PVP....
I often break away and stealth and attack againg when fighting plate classes and then I gain a lot of energy....
As I said before I am not a experienced Rogue, so I am trying to learn the trade.... I really appreciate all comments.
If you believe you have the optimal Rouge PVP spec for fighting any other class, please post it.
I have tried a maxed Sub spec but it is hard against plate.... Ambush and backstab - that is extremly fun to play lost all glory after lvl 65-70 since it wont pierce armour... very sad since this is what makes the Trademark of a Rouge.... What did Blizzard think when they took that ability away. A DK have about 32 000 Hitpoints and we make less than 2k against them with Ambush.,,,, standing in their AOE, getting backstabbed by their pet and rammed in the head by a huge axe..... with lether armor and low hit points :)
From my expericen the 41/5/25 spec is what works best right now for PVP, I tried a combat spec with 2 swords too but the coldown for Killing Spree made it lame in Battlegrounds...
Looking at 41/5/25 PVP spec, most people seems to have the 5/25 part agreed upon. The interesting part is therefore - How do you maximise your damage against all classes with the 41 points spent in Assasination... And make them die faster than yourself :)

It's the combat potency of the Assasination tree. It's 2 energy for
every
critical strike you make. They roll in pretty quick with a respectable crit rating and while it would take a bit to get you a whole extra mutilate or something, it sure is nice to have when you need to do something and are just missing 10 or so energy. From some of my research people seem to split between Focused attacks and Find Weakness with some people splitting the remaining points between the two.
Let's not give the OP false information, or misleading information, Focused Attacks procs from melee crit attacks, not anything else. Not from every critical strike you make.

Pot to kettle. I'm afraid
you're
the one spreading the falsehoods. Focused Attacks will most certainly proc off Mutilate, Fan, and any other crit that isn't a poison, bleed, or finisher. There's a reason you're able to fan longer the larger a pack of mobs gets.
That's exactly what I'm correcting. If you read his post he says EVERY CRITICAL STRIKE. Thus I'm correcting it to 'Melee Critical Strikes' just like the
OFFICIAL
tooltip says.

Hi elwood66 ,
That was pure facts, in a fight with good PVP gear you got 14 energy from Focused Attacks....if I understood right....and you got 50 from Relentless Strikes.
That was my concern when I posted this. In a fast PVP fight, 3 talent points spent in Focused Attacks may not give you the value you hoped for....
If you spent the 3 points in Vile poisions instead and use for example double wound... how much extra damage would that put in the enemy....
if you deliver 20 % additional damage and have a 50 % hit chance with wound poision + I guess some modifications there would be probably more dmg than the 14 point of energy could inflict.... Correct me if I am wrong and please comment my view of Vile Poision,,,, Wouldn Vile Poision be a good choise against all in plate since poision is not affected by armour as far as I know?
Be nice I am a noob at playing rogue.... but I love it!

Mutilate is definitely a melee attack - and therefore it's critical strikes (each weapon counts I believe) will generate two energy.

Where did he say Mutilate doesn't count? Last I checked, Mutilate was a melee attack, thus falling under melee critical strike. The correction he was making was about poisons. Every critical strike would include poisons and Deadly Throw, even though it doesn't proc off of those.
