Svirve can you explain what "block cap" is and I just dont see blocking any less spikey than avoidance tanks. My gear is mostly naxx25 with some naxx10 and I only have 1200 blockvalue so sometimes blocking a string of attacks from a hardhitting boss kills me unless my healers are on the ball.
I hope "block cap" doesnt mean 102% avoidance with Holy shld lol. but im guessin its a certain Block value that almost garuntees your survival in most situations.
Block cap would be when you've pushed hit of the charts.
So none of the attacks made against you will be unmitigated.
102.4% avoidance+block+hs.The 5000 blocked number was a very wild guess since i dont have a decent block set on my paladin and i remember seeing that number somewhere (could've been a wet dream).
Even still as block tanks paladins will take less spiky damage.
1200 BV is more than 10% of most bosses "white swings". and a little more than 5% of a hateful strike (~5.2%)
I'll compare a DK (avoidance tank) to a paladin (block tank)
These are the two builds im using as comparison:
DK / /
Pala. Pretty much cookie cutter tanking builds.
Lets say we get a string of 5 unlucky unavoided attacks.
Each attack hitting for 24 000 damage unmitigated.
The paladin has 60% mitigation from armor + 12%(3+3+6) from talents. The DK has 65% mitigation from armor + 5% from talents.
The paladin takes 6720 damage from one attack (assuming mitigation is addative otherwise 8490)The DK takes 7200 damage from one attack (assuming mitigation is addative otherwise 7980)
The paladin will then block 1200 of that bringing it down to 5520 (7290)The DK just takes it all.
So over 5 attacks (~10 seconds depending on parry gibbing) the paladin will take 27 600 damage (36450)
Over 5 attacks the DK will take 36 000 (39900)
That's a considerable difference to me.
Paladins mitigation will only continue to scale as gear does as well while the DK has a pretty much written-in-stone mitigation tied to it's armor.
P.S I didnt underline the paladins mitigation because of some secret psychology trick to make it seem like they're better i did it because it was easier to read that way and keep track of the numbers.
Edit: I know that im leaving out the fact that DKs will have a much lower chance than paladins of getting these strings of unavoided attacks. But the point is still the same. Avoidance tanks = spiky damage, mitigation tanks = smooth sustained damage.
... If anyone knows how damage mitigation stacks please say so since i did some very slight research (checked wowwiki) and couldn't find anything.
