First, the "slavery" discussed in the Old Testament is not slavery as we know it today. For more information see this quote that I linked earlier.
Slavery in colonial America and Britain in the 18th century was fraught with racism and abuse, but in Old Testament Israel, entrance into slavery simply became a necessity for some. No one forced anyone else into slavery. The slave signed a contract agreeing to serve the master’s family for a period of 7 years. At the end of this time, the Law required the cancellation of the contract. During the indenture period, the slave was entitled to all the rights of any other family member, except the right of inheritance. The closest modern analogy would be that of an au pair. A slave would certainly perform much more strenuous tasks than the light housework required of an au pair, nevertheless similar interpersonal relationships would develop.
Then, why don't you check out this quote?
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.
And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
That is what I mean by a "healthy relationship".

So a human being the property of another human is a healthy relationship. Thanks for clearing that up.

/sigh
I don't know why I argue with you Laihendi, I tell you one thing and you completely ignore it. Let me repeat it again for you since your ears seem broken, mkay?
The Bible does not support slavery, but God knew slavery was going to happen. Therefore, God set down rules of what to do if you do own a slave so that it can be as much like non-slavery (for lack of a better word) as possible.

So why didn't God just set down rules saying you can't have slaves... ?

Is everyone going to listen to God? He tried to set out groundrules since he knew petty humanism wouldn't bend much on this issue.

I propose that all random comments that do no fall in any current threads get dropped into this 'Recycle Bin' thread.

Slavery does not exist today (at least in civilized parts of the world), so there has been a change in that issue.
And if God is going to set down rules for people to live buy, he shouldn't be compromising if he really is as powerful and benevolent as most christians make him out to be.

I have no idea why God did what he did, but I'll be sure to ask him when I die. But I do know one thing, the thing that started this whole debate. And that is that the Bible does not encourage slavery.

But it has no problem with beating your slaves if you happen to have them.
Edit: As long as they don't die within three days.

the bible is outdated and reflects its time period
according to christianity, if you do not worship god, you will be tortured forever, therefore god is a tyrant
slavery was prevalent and not considered evil during the time the bible was written
genesis simply reflects what the common understanding of how the world was created was when it was written
based on what happened during the bible, the lack of outright impossible occurrences means either god is less powerful, doesn't give a crap, or never existed
if god is all loving, why does he care who you marry, whether you wait to have sex or not (insert comment about time period here), who you have sex with, what you say, and what you believe?
god doesn't exist.
there ya go
You just blew my mind. x.x

the bible is outdated and reflects its time periodWhich time period was that? The last 6000 years?according to christianity, if you do not worship god, you will be tortured forever, therefore god is a tyrantChristianity is the way to life, not the alternative to death. This is dependant on how you look at it. A refusal to join a lifeboat simply because it is the only alternative to drowning could be considered flawed logic.slavery was prevalent and not considered evil during the time the bible was writtenThe flaws of the people are not a reflection of the will of God.genesis simply reflects what the common understanding of how the world was created was when it was written

there ya goThe last part is opinion. Your basing the fact that people have free will on the fact that there is no God. Maybe He wanted someone to love Him. How can you love without freewill?
