700-1000+ is quite a bit to average. I'm a 70 Demo Lock(Kerminator - Aegwynn) and while doing sustained dps in heroics I average about 500-550 dps(~800 +spell dmg/~19%crit). Burst damage with seed of corruption in the thousands.
You won't see much that earlier in the 30's and 40's, I really didn't get any good +spell dmg gear until Sunken Temple/BRD. Which is just above your level. I wouldn't be looking in the AH for any good gear like that, it's mostly BoP in instances.

Get a good cast sequence down. An important thing to remember in instances is that being a lock you'll do a lot of damage, so give the tank a few seconds to build aggro before you do your most damage.
If your tank is fighting multiple elites at one time, all you have to is select your tank, and press "F" to select who your tank is fighting, then DoT away.
As far as a pet moth. Don't worry, hunters are OP.
Hunter = Lock + Unfearable Pet + Mail Armor + Uninterruptable Dmg o.O
Be sure to have bought all your spells if you want to do instances. I recently ran with a 38 lock on one of my alts, this guy has been buying runs since VC. He never bought soulstone spell, or bought any spells for his Imp(+3Sta Blood Pact is useless). Two things that are used a lot on instances at those levels.

Get a full set of Shadoweave gear. The items run from level 37 to 44. It's a craftable set, but you rarely see it on the AH so unless you're a tailor or know one, you may be out of luck. There's also a bunch of nice +dmg rings and necklaces that JCs can make. As you move into the 40s, lots of quests give decent +dmg gear as rewards, so consider searching for those items and doing the quests.
Having a lot of +dmg gear makes a HUGE difference as an affliction lock. Drain tanking is so much easier with a decent amount of +dmg.
