I fully recommend this:

Takes a little more tinkering with over your 'Standard DKP' system, but from past experiences, I'd say it's worth it.
Basically it awards EP points per 15 mins / 30 / 1 hour whatever and will award extra for specific bosses you have on farm etc. This will be announced in raid / guild chat so everyone can see and it will list all participants. You can also automatically put people on standby for a raid and have them recieve EP too.
Now, too make this fair .. each item is given a 'GP' value. For example, let's say a ilvl 264 staff would cost you around 1200 GP .. this means if you roll on it .. and win it, it deducts it from your EP in a special way. If I'm not wrong I believe it's EP / GP = PR. Pr is basically your 'rating' which determines who is to get an item.
This can all be viewed ingame by typing /epgp if it's toggled on by the RL.
There's a lot more to say, but need to know if you're interested as it's quite the story ;p

I would also reccomend checking out SKG, or Suicide Kings, loot system as well. It offers one huge advantage over DKP and EPGP, it is very PuG friendly. If your guild never has to pug, then its not really an issue.
In a nutshell, SKG is just a "forced" method making players of the same gear types take turns on winning gear. As players are entered into the SKG list, they are randomly assigned a position, or number. When loot drops, if they want the item, they announce that they want it. Whoever is highest on the list wins the item, then drops to the bottom of the list. So, if there are 3 caster DPS in a group, their positions are 1,2,3....#1 wins a drop, he then goes to position 3, and 2 and 3 become 1 and 2. The system works very similar to "zero-sum DKP"
The pug-friendly part is that pugs are randomly inserted into the list, so they have a legitimate shot at getting loot in the raid.
The system is completly automated through the use of an addon, that can be found at curse, or other similar sites. The list can also be synced with multiple characters and players to allow for different raid leaders to use the same list.
Again, regular DKP or EPGP systems work fine as long as you never need to fill a spot with a pug, or even a friend. But I know that any group I end up in that is using DKP, I leave. Why participate in the fight, if I only am going to get the scraps that the others might not want?
