He is wrong about the Def rating. 540 is cap. You are not super well geared, but my troll alt warrior is about the same and he can tank Emalon and Archevon fine, although I suspect he needs a bit more healing.

540 defense is for
raids
, no matter 10 or 25-mans. Your RL was ignorant.
You're okay for tanking VoA 25, I think it's better to have about 30k health full buffed for Emalon.

Your a bit undergeared for 25m. Its probably doable but you would need extra healing support that can't be undergeared as well. Its always easier to blame the tank than it is to blame 1 of several healers, so get used to taking the fall even if it isn't your fault (although in this case, it is at least partially your fault)

Let me correct one little thing: 540 is NOT the cap, you can go above it. Its a minimum stat to be uncritable not a cap.
I lol'd. That's a weird seperation you make.
What about hit cap? It shouldn't be called a 'cap' either? You can stack as much hit as you like, but after a certain point you can no longer miss your target. Expertise cap? When the target can't dodge?
It's still called a cap, whether you can go further or not.

There is a hit cap because once you reach the point, adding more hit does nothing. There is an expertise cap because once you reach the point the mob can no longer dodge or parry. There is no defense cap because adding more defense decreases one's chance to be hit, and increases chance to block, dodge, and parry. To my knowledge, no one has ever stacked so much defense that it stopped giving them a benefit.

By your definition, expertise should still not be considered a cap, since the common perception of the expertise cap eliminates dodges from the roll table, but not parry.
Either way, i think calling them caps are fine. Its easier to say "i'm def capped" than it is to say "i have the minimum amount of defense require to be uncritable"

Second one is more correct regardles of what is easier.
And I agree that calling it a cap as in "don't ever gem or enchant for it anymore once over the cap" is a bit going to far.
Got called an idiot in TBC for having 510 defence. To bad for that guy I had t5'ish gear, 13500hp unbuffed...and 85% dodge/block/parry/mis. Tanking ZA easely with that low hp.
Stupid DR "grumble"
26expertise is cap for DPS as they atack from behind. A have never heard a tank say he's expertisecapped, al of them tried to reach soft-expertisecap though.

Defense 540 - minimum to be uncritable, each additional point after this still provides same level of total avoidance till one of the avoidance fields (Dodge, Parry and Block) reaches 100%. Stating that 540 is a cap is misleading as the primary ability of defense is avoidance.
True up to a point, except doesn't Defense-based avoidance still suffer from the same diminishing returns as stacking dodge/parry rating?
And while calling it a "cap" may be acceptable to some, it's not accurate. It may not be
optimal
to stack Defense beyond 540, but you can still get benefit out of it, unlike stacking Hit rating beyond the cap, since once you reach the cap additional points have no effect.

Defense adds to parry, dodge and miss, and each of those is then subject to diminishing returns. Defense rating is one of the best stats to get avoidance from, along with dodge rating; theoretically you should go for a mix of those two stats to minimize diminishing returns.

It's also pretty easy to say "I'm crit immune".
