Both have the same mana cost, but Cure Poison only removes one poison effect and Abolish Poison removes five, over 8 seconds.
My question is, is there any reason to use Cure Poison, ever? The only reason I can think of is in the wording of the two: Abolish Poison says "attempts to cure" whereas Cure Poison says "cures".
I'm going to be perfectly honest: I never did the quest to Cure Poison.
Abolish is the way to go, because if you are in fights that require Decursing than most probably the poisons on different targets are going to stack.

It's the same as paladins moving from
Purify
to
Cleanse
. I guess they find the earlier skill to be more level appropriate, then later you get your new-and-improved version, which renders the previously-learned skill useless.

It is useful sometimes.
If you for example have a hunter with a scorpid pet, throwing Viper Sting and Snake Trap on you, you can cast Abolish Poison. While it ticks you can cast Cure Poison without resetting the tick timer of Abolish.

Cure Poison detects whether or not there is a poison debuff on the target before attempting to cleanse.
In a raid cleansing situation, if someone beats you to the punch on cleansing your current target, you save the GCD if you use Cure over Abolish.
Abolish will always use the GCD, regardless if the target has a poison on them at the time of the cast or not.
This is the winner. GCDs are precious in ... well, I was going to say "raids", but actually they're precious all the time. Not to mention the lack of mana expenditure if the spell isn't cast at all.
