Back in early TBC, i led the noob group (gr2) in Karazhan, we had everything but prince and NB on farm, prince we had downed one very lucky time, but cant claim we had him on farm.
Everyone was bickering about loot, some people wanted to roll on absolutely everything, and everyone always argued who got to roll, and who shouldnt. So i decided, no one gets to roll for anything, i will decide who gets what.
So, from Opera this really imba axe dropped. Legionfoe or something, cant remember the name. The hunter wanted it, claiming it was a hunter axe and all, he had netherspite and some epic dagger from somewhere (Moroes? maybe Moroes). The holy pally healer wanted it for grinding, claiming that it was clearly intended for holy paladins BiS for when they went oom or something, and the ret, wielding a polearm from some heroic, a blue, wanted it too.
I really liked the ret, he was a little jack of all trades, put on healing gear for some fights, even healed entire raids when one of the healer didnt show, emergency tanked, offhealed, and did ok damage while having a good attitude and always was positive. I gave it to the ret, and it caused such drama for weeks, even from hunters who werent in raid, i refused to lead a raid ever again.
Moral of the story, never ever pass out loot as you seem fit, roll or dkp.

Have you guys ever heard of EPGP? It even has an add-on for it.
We used in our guild, and I believe it was a awesome system.
Basically, you have 3 attributes:
- EP (Efford Poins) which you gain by raiding (like 500 points every 30 min) and when you do something interesting for the raid;
- GP (Gear Points) are points you get from gear. With the add-on, it even tells you the GP value of the items when you move your mouse over it;
- PR, which is a rating: PR = EP/GP. So, the more GP you get, the lower your rating would be.
Example: Caster trinket drops from Razorscale. 5 People say they are interested. Lootmaster checks each of the 5 people's RP, and gives the item to the one with the highest PR. He then gives that person GP points, which would lower his RP. Next time that person wants loot, his PR will probably not be the top one, so someone else will get the gear.
This system also encourages people to show up for raids, since they need to keep their EP up. It also prevents people from getting a bunch of minor upgrades, and makes them think before they say "I want that!". And it takes all randomness away from looting.

We use EPGP.
Haven't had any problems with it whatsoever, must be fairest and easiest to maintain loot system.
Oh, and, it is a big factor how seriously people in guild take loot.

Being a guild master of my guild my officers and I were thinking about using epgp. Could someone explain it to me I really don't understand it to well but from the looks of it, it's a fair looting system
Yeah, it's pretty fair. The Looting Officer only needs to keep track of EP and GP (which you do with a mod you download from Curse, called EPGP). Then just type /epgp and it will bring up a very nice interface, which you use to assing EP and GP.
Download it, install it, and take a look at it. It's very easy to use.

My problem with all the looting systems is that I am not guaranteed to get a piece. There will always be a bastard who has more DKP or has a luckier roll... Any thoughts on how to fix the issue?
luck
