we're talking about DPS as a number as opposed to the more common use of "DPS" as an action which leads to damage done?
why would anyone spend any time thinking about or discussing something so very pointless?

hmmm, fair points all but i think if people are talking about DPS as a number rather than an activity or as short hand for doing damage they usually make that clear.
however, you quoted my answer and replied with a disagreement. the answer to the question '
can
a warlock out-dps a mage or hunter?' is irrefutably yes (using whichever definition of dps). it may be that simulations with exactly equal gear scores might show hunters and mages doing more damage. it may be that metrics at blizzard HQ show mages and hunters both doing an average 4% more DPS than warlocks across all realms. none of this means that a warlock can
not
do better than a mage or hunter.
the characters we play are far too involved in their tiny sphere of existence that these generalities barely touch our experience. if you're a better player than the hunter you will almost certainly out-DPS them even with a gear disparity. 'bring the player not the class' has been incredibly successful as a concept.
my point, all those posts ago, was that if we answer with 'no, we can't beat mages' then everyone stops trying and, worse than that, starts making posts on teh official forum about how mages are OP and locks should be buffed.
Warlocks
may not be able to beat
Mages
in the grand scheme of things but
a
warlock CAN always beat
a
mage, we're not talking about ret pallies vs destro locks in tBC here.

Because it's not uncommon for people to judge performance based on Recount and, for reasons I don't fully understand, they tend to look at the DPS listing rather than the Damage Done data. As it happens, my lock is currently guildless for exactly this reason, ie a GM/RL who seemed congenitally unable to comprehend what Recount actually showed him
And why exactly would you want to be in such a guild?
If the GM/RL can't understand how recount works even when being explained he is obviously an idiot and you are better off without them.

i must admit i thought that too. it's easy to forget how lucky i am to be in the guild i have.
