Hmm, I don't know how well it would work, but I bet you could break 2k DPS with
http://ptr.wowhead.com/?talent#cVbRzxtRwu0goZZcbcbsfbuc:VqM
Basically taking the same gear as an Arms Warrior.

2K? Easily I suppose. As a BM hunter my devilasaur does 1400-1500 all by his lonesome. But why would you want to?

But remember your pet is going to be constantly focus starved without GftT. (This would be a nice situation for the old 2P T9)
Eh, I would think
this
would be better. Wasn't sure whether to take a 3rd point in TNT or Focused Aim though.
Ah right, I was assuming the +hit to be ranged only like most other talents. It did seem like a waste of many talent points going so far into SV, I also misread Imp. Tracking as ranged only.
I would think FA over TNT until capped, as your pet become too reliant on your crits to miss something like that.
I think the real question is dual-wield and take rogue gear, or 2H with arms/DK gear, or a mixture of both, similar to the 'Inconvenient Ranger' build.

It could eventually be viable.
No, it couldn't.

I suppose if you could hit 2k, then you could be in a Naxx10, since I have run with low-geared guildies who do that, or even a bit less. But you would be a burdon and needing people to carry you.
I suppose you would dual wield?
As for the person who said you would be going for +strength gear and enchants--I still dont think that would be the way to go. After all, your pet would be doing most of the damage here, and his AP is based (correct me if I am wrong) off of your ranged ap. And strength doesnt scale to him--I am pretty sure

True, also I don't believe strength gives double AP for hunters anymore.

For hunters
Agility gives 1 melee AP, 1 ranged AP, and x% crit and dodge (based on level).
For hunters
Strength gives 1 melee AP.
Gearing for strength, even for a melee hunter, is a bad idea. Hunters are designed for range. You can't spam hunter melee abilities (only wing clip, which doesn't deal much damage at all), and are limitted to Raptor Strike (not a whole lot if you count it's just added to a swing) and mongoose bite (which doesn't do a whole lot either). Compare that to just steady shot, and you're looking at a huge loss of DPS.
For comparison, my ranged DPS right now with Aspect of the Viper on is about the same as I do with it off in melee, at the point when I was working on my melee skills a bit (they were high enough for the mobs I was fighting, though).

The real issue is what "fun" value would it bring--even if it were viable?
For me, at least, being a ranged class is part of why I picked hunter. If I wanted to be a melee I would have gone with another class. There are plenty of melee classes--even some with limited magical/range abilities (retadin, enh shammy), if you are looking for that kind of playstyle.
Admittedly, there are no melee/pet classes (although a feral druid is kinda like that)--is that the appeal of this? Or is it that people are bored with the hunter playstyle?

I'd say it's just for poops and giggles.
