Maybe give them half price on repairs. Or a percentage off depending on their BS level.
Repairing at vendors keeps inflation down. Giving the gold to a BS wouldn't help.

Well, there are repair bots for that.

Allow Blacksmiths to repair only their own gear for free, once every hour and only while at an anvil and forge. I don't really feel this would be overpowered, but it would be a nice little bonus that makes sense for the profession.
Blacksmiths, in my opinion, already have a number of "money makers" from their profession; if they could repair other peoples' gear and keep the money, not only would it not align with other gear repairs (owners of the traveler's mammoth don't get to keep the money from those vendors; nor do engineers from their repair bots) it would be hugely out of balance.

Well, the thing I've always wanted on my blacksmith was the ability to craft grappling hooks so I could climb over mountains and take some shortcuts.

Seriously, stop making engineer even more worthless by giving other proffessions a buff. Blacksmithing has enough going for it.
Be kind to us Engineers =/

That would be engineering if anything, gnomish engineering.

Maybe make it so they could repair gear, but instead of taking money, it takes different mats.
Like if you wanted to repair
Ornate Saronite Legplates
, you would need to use a few saronite bars to do so.

i like this.
it also goes along with the 'tailors can repair cloth, leatherworkers repair leather etc etc' idea.
and zdouse, clearly you have been a member of wowhead too long if -every single post- you come across has been necro'd or done before. go to the official forums and quit your trolling here.

This sounds more far fetched than a blacksmith, but we should let the engineer be able to repair their own gear. Since blacksmith is more mail/plate gear, it'd seem a little strange to use a hammer and anvil to repair cloth and leather, plus an engineer could make different forms of it, depending on what they can wear, like the goggles. Engineers are already nerfed until 3.2 (even then it's not better than other professions) and this would help them big time.
